Deciphering Wrist Warmer pattern

I’m up to the thumb gusset, next round is K28, place marker, M1, place marker, work to end… the part I don’t understand is M1.
The pattern defines it as…
Make 1 (inc) - Lift strand between needles to LH needle and work strand through the back loop, twisting it to prevent a hole, [knit or purl as indicated by pattern st]
hmmm, any easy hints here?
