Hi there, I have just bought and downloaded what I presumed was a fairly straightforward looking jumper - Easyline by Judith Brien in Wool and Me. Having looked at the instructions I am totally confused with the detail. After the first 3 pages there are 2 more with tables which I cannot fathom. Not being a very experienced knitter I don’t know how to decipher it all ! can anyone help me please?
Deciphering long instructions
There’s lots of help here.
Maybe just start at the beginning, go step by step and when you’re stuck come and ask for help.
Have you chosen your size?
Did you make a gauge swatch?
Are you able to cast on?
It’s nice style, I like the shape and exposed seams, my current project will have some exposed seams too.
Thank you, I will just have to start and hope that the instructions in the tables will begin to make sense!!
What do the tables relate to? Size? Amount of yarn needed? A stitch pattern?
You could take a photo of one of the tables and post it. You can’t post an entire pattern due to copyright, but parts are OK. Along with doing a gauge swatch, you’ll want to go through the pattern and circle or highlight the numbers and/or instructions for your chosen size.
These kind of instructions seem to occur more frequently in recent years. The designers are trying to be perfectly organized and clear for all the sizes.
From the comments by the project knitters you should just go from one table to the next taking it one at a time. Sometimes there is a one or two line summary of what comes next which can also be confusing until you read a bit further. The explicit directions usually follow.
Yes, I definitely agree with ColoCro, mark or highlight the numbers for your size. It’ll make the tables easier to read through and knit.
Thank you salmonmac, I think this pattern is going to take some time, I’m waiting for some wool to arrive then I’ll get going!!
Hi, I have just joined this group and seen your question. I am also doing this pattern now, and have found it confusing to read, and am a very experienced knitter. Can you tell me whether you sorted out reading the tables. I am nearly at the end of Table 1, and it looks like after that I would be near the length showing for ‘E’ on page 8, so wondering whether I don’t then do Table 2, as then there would be far too many stitches? Any help would be appreciated thanks.
Welcome to the forum!
@nantyci may well see your post and be able to advise. Which size are you making?
It seems that for some sizes you skip a Table and move on to the next. Could that be the case?
Hi there, only just seen this post, I’m afraid I can’t help as I gave up trying to decipher the instructions. I’m not a very experienced knitter and thought the jumper looked fairly straight forward to knit from the picture! It’s a shame as I really liked the design and look of the jumper, I might try it again in the future.
Thanks for your replies. I am doing the smallest size. I think you are correct, that Table 2 should be skipped, but it doesn’t actually say that anywhere. It is written in a very confusing way but I think I have worked it out now.
OK, that’s good. One of the project knitters on Ravelry notes that a different table is skipped for her size. It should be listed in the directions but if the stitch count works and the number of rows look right then maybe it’s just a missing direction.
Let us know how it’s going and maybe put a lifeline in now just in case you need it.
