Can anyone help me with this pattern? I’m a fairly new knitter and I’m stuck! So far, the pattern has given me row by row instructions. I have reached the following line (in bold below): “Patt 6 rows straight, working cables as set on 1st and 5th of these 6 rows.” – What?

Here’s a quick summary of the pattern so far:

Ribbing for 6 rows
increase row
1st row K
2nd row K P K etc
3rd row K Cable K etc
4th row K P etc
"These 4 rows set the cable and garter st pattern."
Inc Row (ending with 106)
Next Row K5 P4 etc
Next Row K6 Cable K9 etc
Next Row K5 P4 K9 etc
Inc Row K6 M1 K4 M1 K9 etc (ending with 122 stitches)
Next Row K6 P4 K11 etc
Next Row K7 Cable K11 etc.
Next Row K6 P4 K11 etc
Inc Row K7 M1 K4 M1 K11 etc (ending with 138 stitches)

So what do you think this means??? I’d be grateful for someone’s expertise! Thanks Rachel

Just continue as you have been with the pattern without any increases, crossing the cables on the 1st and 5th rows.

Thank you so much for your reply. Can you tell me specifically which series of 6 rows I should do (i’ve labeled the rows with A-M)?

If I use F-G-H-J-K-L my cables will not be on row 1 and 5?

Use CDEFG without the increases. You’ll cable on C and G.

Ummm, I’d think she’d use G-L(without the increases) because that would put the cables on 1st and 5th rows. Or any other combination… that really is written oddly, are you supposed to ignore the increase rows?

It says to pattern 6 rows straight, so either combination will work, as long as you leave out the increases.

Thank you for trying to help me with this. I tried both suggestions but the cable twist is not lining up properly. I am retyping this portion of my pattern to include all details… maybe you will try to help me again… :slight_smile:

(note C4F = slip next 2 st on cable ndle and hold at front, K2, then K2 from cable needle.)

a. 7 rows of ribbing
b. 1st row (right side) K to end
c. 2nd row K4, [P4, K7] to last 9, P4, K5
d. 3rd row K5, [C4F, K7] to last 8, C4F, K4
e. 4th row K4, [P4, K7] to last 9, P4, K5
These 4 rows set the cable and garter st pattern.
f. Inc Row (right side) K5, *m1, K4, m1, k7; rep from * to last 8, m1, k4, m1, k4 (106 sts)
g. Next Row K5, * p4, k9; rep from * to last 10, p4, k6
h. Next row K6, *C4F, k9; rep from * to last 9, C4f, K5
i. Next Row K5, * p4, k9; rep from * to last 10, p4, k6
j. Inc Row K6, *m1, k4, m1, k9; rep from * to last 9, m1, k4, m1, k5 (122 sts)
k. Next Row K6, *p4, K11; rep from * to last 11, p4, K7
l. Next row K7, *C4f, k11; rep from * to last 10 sts, C4f, K6
m. Next row K6, *p4, K11; rep from * to last 11, p4, K7

Since H and L have the cable cross on them, they would about have to be the 1st and 5th rows.
