Hello everyone. I’m brand new here. I’ve only been knitting for a few months (been crocheting for 16 years).
I’m having a terrible time understanding why I’m not landing on a knit row in this pattern that’s worked in stockinette.
Here is the section of the pattern where my issue lies:
Next row (right side) K3, M1, k to end.
Work even for 3 rows.
Rep the last 4 rows 4 times more and the inc row once more.
SLEEVE SHAPING
Bind off 9 sts at beg of next and 3 foll alt rows.
Work even for 12 rows.
SHAPE FRONT
Next row (right side) K1, skp, k to end.
Here’s my issue, the last row before “sleeve shaping,” is the inc row which is a knit row. That means the first row of “sleeve shaping” would be purl. There are 12 rows under sleeve shaping, and if the first of those 12 is purl, that means the last of those 12 would be a knit row. BUT! The first row of “shape front” is also a knit row.
Where have I gone wrong here? I can’t seem to understand why I’m not landing on a knit row for the shape front. I’m very new at reading knit patterns, so any help would be much appreciated. I’m making this sweater for my baby girl. She inspired me to learn how to knit.
I thank you so much in advance for your help.
Welcome to KH! You have one of the best of all possible inspirations in your daughter.
Yes, the increase section ends having completed a RS (right side) knit row.
The sleeve shaping has bind offs on the WS (wrong side) purl rows. That would be:
WS bind off 9
RS
WS bind off 9
RS
WS bind off 9
RS
WS bind off 9
You’ll begin the 12 rows even with a RS row and end with a WS row ready to start the Shape Front.
That said, it would be surprising for a pattern to have errors in RS/WS. I usually just work one fewer or more row to get onto the correct side.
Oh thank you so much for your response.
Under the sleeve shaping, I think I was assuming the bind off/alt bind off rows were part of the “work even for 12 rows.” So I do the bind off/Alt rows and then 12 separate even rows? Hat must be where I was going wrong. I wasn’t reading the pattern properly. Thank you so much.
Yes, the 12 rows even (even meaning without any shaping, inc, or dec) are completed before the bind off rows. It’s easier with each pattern that you work. Please do post a photo when you finish. We love seeing finished projects!

That helps so much. It makes so much more sense now. I can’t thank you enough for your kindness and patience to help me. My grandmother passed away before she could teach me to knit, so I’m so happy this forum is here. I cannot wait to share the finished product with you. Thank you!
