Dbpns cast-on question

I am trying the Noro one-skein hat under floryknits@yahoo.com. Directions are “cast on 12 stitches on 3 dbpns and knit with the 4th.” Does that mean to cast on 12 stitches on EACH needle, or 12 stitches on the first and divide?

I keep reading to “Trust the pattern” but first I have to UNDERSTAND the pattern !

Anybody else make this hat?

well typically it means to cast on 12 and then divide but that’s an awefully small number of stitches for a hat…is it worked from the top down?

The pattern is knit from the top down. I am hoping to work on this during my lunch hour today at work. What should I do then?

I just googled your pattern and looked at it. It is to divide 12 stiches over three needles and work from there with increases along the way.

now what I would do, though, is work from the bottom up as the other instructions suggest…feels like less finishing work to me (probably not really but that’s my perception) and it is what i prefer to do.

Thanks for answering me so quickly. Now why would a hat take 2 skeins if you knit from the bottom up, but only 1 if you knit from the top down?
What am I missing here ?

you ask an excellent question that i really don’t have the answer to. i would doubt it is two full skeins but no idea. I have made a one skein hat…i can’t remember how big it was now…it sits atop a stuffed Ewok that I haven’t seen in a while…seems like it was on the small side though.

Do the two variations use the same yarn and needle size? If the top down one used thicker yarn/larger needles, you’d need less.

nope they are both the noro and size 7 needles. I have a feeling it has to do with the cast on but I am not sure.
