Did anyone watch dancing with the stars tonight? They had a guest singer, some chick named natasha bedingfield, and she was wearing a hat that I would love to know how to knit. I have looked everywhere (well, honestly here, knitty, and pattern central) for something like it. It looks like (what we called) a “dread bag” which the kids with dreadlocks would wear to keep them up in the summer. If you’ve ever seen a photo of Bob Marley then you’ve seen the hat. It was like that but shorter. Does anyone have/know where I can get that pattern?!?!?!?!
Dancing with the stars?!
ok, so I’ve done a little research since I posted, and I’m basically looking for a pattern for a rasta hat or a rasta tam. I found a crochet pattern

But I’d rather not crochet. Thats why I knit! So I don’t have to (well, rarely) crochet! If anyone can give me some hints on converting the pattern, that might help too!

Here is a site with a bunch of hat patterns that are calculator-based so I think you might be able to adjust a beret/tam pattern to make it extra big on the top? Haven’t played around with it to really know for sure.
Also she has lots of links to other hat sites too.
Doh! You already posted that one and its crochet!
I just foung a blog where she mentioned using a pattern from Vogues Knit1 magazine, but I can’t seen to find the mag anywhere. Does anyone have the pattern that I could get? I would be willing to pay for it. I subscribed to the mag, but it is in an older issue evidently. If not, then I think I’m just going to have to break down and crochet one. Either way it will be what I want! (I think I’d like it even more if the DH would let me have dreadlocks!)
Thanks!
Usually they are called rasta tams… but here is one you might like
Thanks so much for the link! I forgot about that hat! IT should do perfectly! Just a note though-the cast on number was really small, and when I tried to make it a few months ago it was way too small for my big head (I even used bigger needles!). My DH did a little math magic and calculated that to make it bigger you would have to add 20 to your cast on number of stitches. (Oh do I love that man!)
Thanks for reminding me of that hat. I had frogged it in frustration, so maybe I can resurrect it! It also reminds me that I need to see Elizabethtown! Paula Deen from Food Network is in it!
