Cross stitch pattern

have a pattern for a scarf which has a particular “cross-stitch” pattern that is repeated. Was wondering if someone could help with this? maybe if it was worded a little different, i could understand it better.

cast on 21sts

row 1: K2, pm, work cross-stitch pattern on next 17sts, pm, K2
row 2: K2, sm, " " " " " " " sm, K2

cross stitch pattern:

row 1: *Knit the 2nd stitch without removing it from needle by reaching behind and inserting needle between 1st and 2nd stitch, knit the 1st stitch and take both stitches off left needle; repeat from *, end K1

row 2: *Purl the 2nd stitch without removing it from needle, purl 1st stitch and take both stitches off left needle; repeat from *, end P1

repeat rows 1 and 2 for pattern.

i think i am making this more difficult than it has to be but i’m frustrated. i appreciate any help. thanks

Think of this as a mini 2 st cable. Although this video knits through the back of the second st (and you want to knit into the front of both the second and first sts) it at lease may give you the idea of the cross or twisted st.
Alternatively, you could put the first st on a cable needle and hold in back, knit the next or second st and then knit the st on the cable needle. The cross st is just an easier way to the same result without the cable needle. Same concept for the purls.

These are also called Right and Left twist stitches and videos can be found searching for those terms.
