Crochet pattern help

Ok, let me explain as you might get a wee bit of a kick out of this.

I bought a ‘learn to crochet’ kit for ages 8+ I did that with knitting
but I did that for the pattern as I liked it. This one I just did to get me
the starter supplies cheap.

I stink at learning by drawing and written instructions. Bascially
I stink at learning. That’s why I love this site so much. The videos
for knitting and the forum ppl can’t be beat.

Now to the point, I can not understand what it is telling me to do in the
following instructions (for ages 8+).

 1. Start with making a chain of 4 = no problem

 2. Join chain together with a slip stitch = I think I have that. To me it’s just chaining the 2 ends together with a result of 1 loop on needle.

 3. Chain 3, then double crochet through the center of the chain. There will be 11 double crochets total. Join into top of chain 3 with a slip stitch. (11 stitches not including chain 3)

Ok first, what do they mean through the center of the chain? Secondly
how do they come up with 11 stitches when there are only 4 chain stitches?

I really should know better than to try and learn something without a
teacher but currently I can’t get out to take any classes.

On the up side, I practiced knitting with dpn the other day so I am progressing. I hope to knit a felted hat soon.

exactly. Now you have a loop, a circle if you will, a hole.

I think all it’s telling you to do here is to double crochet 11 times into the hole, into the middle of the circle. Not crocheting into a chain actually, but into the big loop that was the result of step 2.

As I read what you say and look at the picture I believe that is
exactly what they are saying. Even with a picture I couldn’t figure
it out.

I will try and get to this pattern tomorrow.
Thanks! :cheering:
