Crochet missing stitches

I’m a new crocheter and am trying the Blossom and Buds Crochet along on Sirdar.

I start with 24 chains. It says miss the first two loops and half treble crochet into the next stitch and each stitch thereafter. Fine. 22 stitches.

Next row, 3 chain to get the height. Miss the next stitch and crochet into all following stitches to row end. Should be 22 stitches, but I’m only getting 21! What am I doing wrong???

I’ve tried starting in the first stitch, but end up with 23!!! :woman_shrugging:

Have you followed the videos that go along with this pattern? (see especially ~15min)
Perhaps @Snowball @Snowfleas @ColoCro @ZKOhio can offer advice.

The video salmonmac posted seems to me to be at odds with the written pattern. To skip/miss the first (next) stitch the turning chain has to count as a stitch and in the video I’m almost certain she works into the top of the last stitch of the previous row. I would go with the video demonstration and the stitch count should be correct.

@salmonmac - great find on the video!

I also thought the count of 21 might be from counting the half trebbles (a distinctly British crochet term) with out counting the chain 3 as the first stitch.

When doing any stitches taller than UK doubles, it’s most common to count the beginning chain as a stitch. It should state this in the pattern, but designers often make the assumption that you know this. So you have 21 htrs + ch3 = 22. You’ll probably work into the top of the chain on the next row, as you treat it like an ordinary sttich.
