If I can’t find what I’m looking for. I create my own patterns I make notes as I go along so I won’t forget what I had done.:knitting:
Dose any other expereince knitters out there do them?

Yup! Almost always invent my own. (especially for sweaters! don’t have enough experience with socks yet to create my own - but am determined to get there eventually.) My reasoning is this - knitting is my art form. No artist ever became famous in his/her own right be copying a famous artist’s work. That’s a forgery, not a work of art. True artists are originators. Why recreate another artist’s work?
Now, that having been said, I also realize that many people PREFER to follow instructions. It’s a safety net. Like following a recipe (something else I never do) they prefer consistency of outcome to the process of invention. THAT’S OKAY!!! For those individuals - that’s why patterns exist! They will enjoy their hobby as much as I do. So don’t feel badly if you need a pattern! You will always put your own spin on it anyway, in your selection of the yarn, and the way your own hands work the needles - your tension and stitch are never going to be the same as someone else’s. Your own two hands MADE this thing of beauty, and it is a joy to behold!
For those who need the personal exercise of invention, use this hobby to create! Be the one who invents the patterns others follow. That way everyone gets what they need!

Hi~~~I don’t have that experience, but I am trying to figure out how to adjust Baby booties to fit an adult.
My DH is on Hospice, & some of the Baby Booties are so cute!!

I’ve been making up my own patterns for about the last year and a half. I’m very proud when something works out! Some things don’t work the first time, but I can usually figure that out early on so I don’t have a lot of hours invested. I like doing it!
If you like to develop your own sweater patterns, I know you would appreciate THE SWEATER WIZARD. It’s worth every dollar. It will give you the ‘blueprints’ and ‘specs’ for any style of sweater, but YOU DECIDE on the yarn, the pattern stitch, the trims, the ribbings, the embellishments, the size, the fit, etc. It will give you specs for the correct size! It prevents you from a lot of frogging, or, worse, ill-fitting sweaters. No matter how beautiful the yarn and pattern stitch, if the sweater doesn’t fit, it’s a bust.
I “designed” these recently, using the Sweater Wizard as my “architect”! I am still the ‘contractor-builder’ and designer! The Wizard just draws up the ‘blueprints’ for me, including schematics! He tells me how many yards I will need, too!
If you want an adult verision. Look at the amount of sts in each size then carry on counting for an adult pair. That’s what I’ve done from a baby’s aran cardi to an adult. Remember it’s a lot of counting and graphing on paper. It’s took me ages to do it. The out come was brill and I’m still wearing my cardi. I’m proud of that one cos I had done my own adult pattern from a babies pattern.

Yes, I made them myself! With the ‘blueprint’ that the Sweater Wizard spits out, all you have to do is decide what kind of edging you want, what kind of buttonbands, what kind of cuffs, etc. I used Nicky Epstein’s book called KNITTING ON THE EDGE for the Petite Bell Ruffle for the ‘hem’ and cuffs. The rest of the sweater was just st st really and very easy!
You have designed beautiful work! I am a designing novice. I feel that way about my crocheting, embroidery and other crafts. It hasn’t gotten to my knitting just yet but it will. I am making a couple of beautiful sweaters among other things at the moment but one of them I am following the pattern. It is a beautiful pattern with lots of cables and my son fell in love with it. The yarn choice was ours but the pattern was his choice.:cheering:

I have only just recently started thinking about designing my own patterns. I feel like I am beginning to understand what my sts look like and I have started working on a hanging dish towel that combines a couple of other designs. I am also conjuring a pattern in my mind for a messenger bag and backpack for my DD. Working on a shrug idea, too. I do enjoy just following patterns, because I can just go for it and not think too much. (I rarley use the yarn that is listed in the pattern.) As soon as I finish up some other projects I will get to work on some of my own designs.
Artlady, I was just thinking about you the other day. I was thinking that I hadn’t read any posts from you lately.(Must be looking in the wrong places.) Wondering what you’ve been working on. Your sweaters are beautiful as always…
Thanks for thinking of me! I’ve been working on several projects at a time, kinda overlapping them. That seems to make everything go slower, but then all of a sudden, BANG! you have a bunch of FO’s to share!

I got a new ‘smart phone’…a Blackberry of sorts, but [I][B]smarter [/B][/I]than a Blackberry. (uh oh, hope that comment doesn’t start a Blackberry Wars! :teehee:) So now, when we’re up in the high mountains this summer, I can check KH and Rav and post messages! Yay!
