Creating a pattern?

So, this is going to be highly complicated. I’ll state that now.

For quite sometime I’ve been searching and searching for what I thought would be a fairly basic pattern, but alas, I have ended up empty handed.

I want to make an asymmetrical lace(ish) cowl. I was originally inspired by the Katniss cowl in Catching Fire. [pic] But as the winter months vanished, I thought it would be cool to create something in a similar shape (but no under arm portion) but in a much lighter way. I thought this would be easy.

So, as I cannot find a pattern I like, I was attempting to create my own, but am utterly stuck on doing that. I’ve never actually done anything like this. I basically want it to have the shape of this.

But just be like a mesh pattern, something breathable like k2tog, YO. Now, what I can’t quite figure out is should I start it in the round? Start straight? Going from one to the other would mess up the pattern right?

I’m basically a lost mess covered in yarn from many failed attempts to do this without advice. Help? OR if you know a pattern like the one above but for knitting, let me know! Scouring Raverly has not worked.

What a cool idea! What methods have you tried? Short rows? You might start at the “pointy” end and increase to the shape and size (diameter) you want then join in the round to finish it. You could look at some of [these cowls](http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#sort=best&query=bandana cowl) for ideas maybe. They’re smaller but the construction could be similar to what you want. Just a couple of thoughts. Best of luck figuring this out.
