Counting Rows

Man oh man, I’m struggling. I watched videos and read instructions on counting rows but I can’t figure out how many I’ve done. I know you don’t count the cast on, but it’s hard to tell where my first row starts. I am confident that I did 6 rows in 1x1 rib stitch, then switched to 2x2. I can’t tell if I have done 15 rows or not. I see 15 holes… Here are a couple photos. Thoughts?

I’m afraid I can’t help you count the rows but I know there is a way of doing so that somebody will be able to help you with but I suggest you either buy a row counter (they really are cheap and will be of great use to you) or simply use pen and paper and mark off each row as you do it. Good luck

It looks like 11 rows above the initial ribbing. Sometimes it’s easier to count purl bumps instead of Vs.

Thanks Jo. :slightly_smiling_face: I write my rows down but I had to backtrack a row and a half then I got sort of lost.

I have a little digital counter I can wear as a ‘ring’ (though usually I have it on the arm of the chair!), or draw tally marks on paper. You might have to try more than one, however - the first one I bought works really well, but I mislaid it for a while so bought a similar one, which had a rough patch on the screen making the display hard to read, and it turned off before I could even finish a relatively short row!
When doing stocking stitch I count the Vs but sometimes it gets tricky when you get close to the cast on row. If you get to know your own tension better, sometimes you can use that as a rough guide.

I use the cast on yarn tail to define the side I’m on…noting it can be RS or WS…let’s call it RS and tail on the RS.

After that, PM ever how often you want…I PM every five rows and on the RS. I can then count by fives to know the row count.

You can vary the placement of the markers ever how many rows you want. Perhaps ten row would work better for you.

A lifeline, perhaps and every 50 rows, or the number of your choice, will help you keep count, too.

I find that working with 'dark yarn, as you picture, is hard to see anything…a dropped stitch won’t show very easy, either.

***** I notice you have your work stretched and and with a light behind it…that’s a good way of seeing/counting. Bravo!

Happy Holidays!

Thank you! Yes, it was my cast on row and dark yarn making it hard to differentiate between rows but I finished one leg warmer and think I can make the other one symmetrical lol.
