Converting pattern to knit in the round

How do I convert a pattern meant for knitting on straight needles into one using a circular needle? This is my first attempt at knitting a hat in the round (and doing cables!) and I’d like to make sure I’m doing the conversion correctly. My questions right now are:

  1. Where it says “Next Row (WS): *P3, p into back and then front of next st (increase made)” does it become “*k3, k into back and then front of next st”?
  2. Do I just reverse the order and k vs. p for the even numbered (WS) rows, as in Row/Round 2 becoming “k6, (p1, k1tbl) twice, p1”?
  3. When I start shaping the crown, would Row/Round 1 (WS) become “*k6, p1, k3tog, p1”?

Thanks in advance for your help!
Here is the pattern I’d like to use:

HAT
Cast on 88 sts. Work in K2, p2 Rib until piece measures 5 in. (12.5 cm) from beg.
Next Row (WS): *P3, p into back and then front of next st (increase made), rep from * across row – 110 sts at end of row.
Begin Cable Pattern
Row 1: *k6, (p1, k1 tbl) twice, p1; rep from * across.
Row 2: *k1, (p1 tbl, k1) twice, p6; rep from * across.
Row 3: *3/3 LC, (p1, k1 tbl) twice, p1; rep from * across.
Row 4: Rep Row 2.
Rows 5-8: Rep Rows 1 and 2 twice.
Rep Rows 1-8 until piece measures about 9 1/4 in. (23.5 cm) from beg, end with a Row 3.
Shape Crown
Row 1 (WS): *K1, p3tog, k1, p6; rep from * across – 90 sts at end of row.

Hi and welcome to KH!
Yes, it looks like you’ve got it right for all your questions. Reverse the k and p sts on the WS rows, and read the WS rows from right to left. The increase can be a conventional knit front and back (kfb). Since the cable twists are always on a RS row, there’s no change there. You’ll be able to see the columns of knit and purl sts and the cables easily because you’ll always have the right side facing you.

Would you please edit the pattern to leave out the last 10 rows of Shaping the Crown? That way we won’t run into copyright problems.

Oops I didn’t even realize there could be copyright problems from this. Sorry! Editing, done. Thanks again for your help!

Sorry, but just to clarify, where the original pattern says, “Row 2: *k1, (p1 tbl, k1) twice, p6; rep from * across,” does the p1 tbl become k1 tbl, or do I knit through the front like a normal knit stitch when I convert it? I think I’m getting more confused the more I think about this…

It may help to try it out on needles, even if you only do one or two repeats. You can knit a swatch in the round without having to do the whole pattern this way. It’ll give you a chance to see how your rewritten pattern works.
Yes, instead of ptbl, do ktbl. This isn’t going to change the pattern in a noticeable way. It’s a decorative twisted stitch. Even if you skip the “tbl” on a row, it’ll look pretty much the same.
