Converting DPN to Magic Loop

I know this may seem silly, but I am attempting the Lion Brand Men’s Grey Socks pattern (free) http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/60049.html and instead of using DPNs, I (and my husband) are doing them with the Magic Loop method.

So far so good - we’ve done our cuffs and have continued down the leg of the sock and are ready to start on the heel flap and then turning the heel. I haven’t done a sock Magic Loop before and have only attempted a sock once before on DPNs, so I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around how to “convert” the pattern for use with Magic Loop since the instructions are really specific to using 3DPNs.

My issue so much isn’t how to do the flap (I realize that I need to work half of the stitches, which works out well since with Magic Loop I only have two needles so I already have half on just a single needle to work) but more when it’s time to do the gussets… it tells me what to do when I have three needles – do this with needle 1, do this with needle 2, do this with needle 3… but I don’t have 3 needles and am not sure if I’m just over analyzing or if there’s something I need to keep in mind or remember to convert it for use with just the two needles of Magic Loop.

Any help you can give that will allow me to wrap my brain around doing this 2D vs. 3D (kinda sorta) would be greatly appreciated

What I do is place DPN #1 and DPN #3 on the one…and letting DPN 2 be by itself…since it’s the instep…You can use markers to help divide it up any way that easiest for you though.

I also posted a pictures awhile back on my blog on how I divide up for ML…they might help some

Thank you! I’m at work but I took a quick peek at your blog post and have sent it to myself at home to check out once we finish the heel flap and turn and are ready to do the gussets. It seemed a little hazy to me but I think it’s because I skimmed quickly instead of taking in the instructions and I don’t have my sock in front of me at the moment! This will all make sense once I get home  Thank you – I’ll give it a go this weekend and let you know how it turned out <3
