Converting 5 needle pattern to 4?

I am making the “Simply Sweet Socks” pattern found here.

I have made the North Country Cotton baby socks using 4 needles, so I am hoping that knowledge will get me through this with 4 needles… I have made it through using just 4 needles so far, but at the gusset decrease it is very specific about what goes on which needle.

My question is, why do some sock patterns call for 4 needles and other 5? Will it mess the sock up if I do it on 4, as long as I keep up with what goes where?

You could use markers to note which is which, but if you’ve made socks before it shouldn’t really matter how many needles.

I finished them and you are right Jan. If you have made socks before it doesn’t matter how many needles. Thank you. I feel very proud for making that work! LOL.

I think the reason is that some folks like to work with 5 needles and some with 4 so they write patterns both ways. I don’t like using 5 needles much, I prefer the triangle to the square as I work.
