Continental Method vs. English Method

I’m an English knitter, but decided to try the Continental method. I sat for HOURS at my computer with Amy’s video playing over and over and over.

There seems to be a disconnect between my brain and fingers, because no matter how many times I tried it, I couldn’t get even ONE stitch completed.

I’m pretty tenacious about things, so I haven’t yet given up. LOL but ferpetessake, attempting that AND not smoking? By the time I was finished, I was looking for victims LOL.

Hi Feef,

We’re neighbors! I live in Redding :waving:

Best,
Susan

I have knitted English for 47 years and am just now learning about continental and combined. I tried continental with a video and had a horrible time but I am going to keep practicing as I’d like to do both, combo too. But I don’t know after 47 years of English I can go pretty fast! I think it is based on personal taste.

Hey Susan,

We ARE neighbors! Glad to meet ya’. :waving:

So I’m an English style knitter and recently I’ve been working in seed stitch a lot for a scarf. It’s going frustratingly slow and I was thinking about trying to learn the Continental method. However, I tried a bit and to my dismay my gauge was somewhat looser. I generally knit too tight to follow any pattern properly which is irritating. Do you think that my Continental will tighten up with practice or will it remain somewhat loose, maybe allowing me to actually attempt fitted clothes?
Thank you!

P.S. I’m sorry if this is in the wrong place, I really still don’t understand the structure of forums very well

I can do both, I prefer the English if I am knitting right handed and Continental left handed

Your continental will start tightening with practice, I do continental when I knit left handed and can go pretty quick.

If you want to knit Continental and keep it loose then concentrate for a while on keeping it loose, let it become habit and see what happens. I am primarily a Continental knitter, it took me a while to learn to loosen up my stitches, and find that my English is tighter and I have to pay attention to that. Just try to make a habit of whatever it is you want to do. FWIW
