i’m a new knitter and just learn how to knit yesterday, and so kink of confusing and still need to learn more, and please help me with this pattern:
Increasing tips: Inc inside 1 edge st by making a yo. On the return row knit yo into back of st in order to avoid a hole.

Decreasing tips: Dec inside 1 edge st.
Dec as follows after 1 edge st: P2 tog.
Dec as follows before 1 edge st: P2 tog into back of st.

Neck warmer: Begin with the centre part with cable pattern, pick up sts round the piece and knit the Rib. Cast on 15 sts on needle size 4 mm with 2 threads Alpaca (double thread). Knit 2 rows garter sts and continue in M.1 (= 13 sts) with 1 edge st each side knitted in garter sts throughout. At the same time inc 1 st each side on every other row a total of 6 times – see Increasing tips = 27 sts – knit new sts from the WS and purl them from the RS. When piece measures 65 cm dec 1 st each side on every other row a total of 6 times - see Decreasing tips = 15 sts. Knit 2 rows garter sts and cast off loosely.
Rib: Knitted round. Pick up approx 342 to 366 sts (divisible by 3) round the neck warmer on circular needle size 4 mm with 2 threads Alpaca. Purl 1 round, knit 1 round and continue in Rib, K2/P1. When Rib measures 2 cm inc every other P section to P2. When piece measures 3 cm inc remaining purl sections to P2. When Rib measures 5 cm inc every other purl section from P2 to P3. Cast off on next row in Rib.

it said “Inc inside 1 edge st by making a yo. On the return row knit yo into back of st in order to avoid a hole” what do i need to do, how to yo into back of st , i know how to yo by watching the video but just not sure yo into back st, is it the same thing?
And then : “Dec inside 1 edge st” , what is it mean?
Again:" P2 tog into back of st" , i know how to p2 tog but not sure it p2 tog into back st.
And it said to cast on 15 st and continute to M.!( =13 st) , it should be 15 st not 13 st, or cast on 13 st and continute to M.1 ( =13 st) , i’m really confusing with that, do i need to dec st to make it from 15 to 13 st.
Sorry that i have so many questions but please if you try to help , please answer all my questions , and please go to the website below for diagram, i don’t understand it and please help me explain step by step, so if you can help me write down the pattern clearly step by step, i’d be really thankful for your help.
Thank you very much

If you go to the Glossary page and look for ktbl you’ll find a video for it, as well as p2tog into back loop (p2tog tbl). Each st has 2 legs, one hangs over the front of the needle (which is the one you normally knit into) and one over the back which if you knit into it twists the stitch. Knitting into the back of the YO you did on the previous row closes it up so the hole is smaller. To ‘dec or dec inside edge st’ is to work the edge st, then do the dec or inc.

It sounds like you’ve got a Drops/garnstudio pattern; M.1 is how they label their charts so it’s not the same as m1, an increase. You didn’t include the link so we can’t see the pattern. These patterns aren’t too difficult if you’ve got some experience in knitting, but they don’t spell out every stitch and row. Since it’s your first project, you might think of another pattern that’s similar instead, with more details.

Lets start at the beginning.

You cast on 15 stitches and knit 2 rows. When you knit every row you are doing garter stitch. They want you to keep an edge stitch on each side in garter stitch so on every row you knit the stitch at each edge. You follow the M.1 chart for the center 13 stitches. 1 edge stitch on each side + the 13 for the chart=15. Starting here they want you to increase 1 at each edge every other row by doing a yarn over. So row 3 will be: K1, yo, chart M.1., yo, k1.

it said “Inc inside 1 edge st by making a yo. On the return row knit yo into back of st in order to avoid a hole” what do i need to do, how to yo into back of st , i know how to yo by watching the video but just not sure yo into back st, is it the same thing?

When you do row 4 you will be knitting the yarn overs you made on row 3 in the back to twist them and close the hole a yarn over usually makes. You are not doing a “yo into the back of the st”, you are just knitting the yarn over from row 3 in the back. Here is how you do row 4: K1 (the edge st), and then knit the M1 chart starting at the left edge and working to the right. Evidently the first stitch is a knit. To knit it, instead of putting the right needle where you usually do to knit, put it behind the left needle, straight on pointing right to left into the strand of the yo, wrap your yarn like normal and knit the stitch there. Continue across the row and when you get to the yarn over on the other side work it as I described at the beginning of the row, knit the last stitch.

You keep increasing every other row like that until you have 27 stitches. The stitches that you increase on each side of the 13 chart stitches they want you to work in Reverse Stockinette. So just like regular Stockinette, but with the back side as the right side in this case, but keep the 1 stitch right at each edge in garter by always knitting it.

Knit to 65 cm. Now begin the decreases.

And then : “Dec inside 1 edge st” , what is it mean?

That just means to work the edge stitch on each side and work the decrease as it says:

Dec as follows after 1 edge st: P2 tog.
Dec as follows before 1 edge st: P2 tog into back of st.
in one stitch from the edge.

So at the beginning of the first decrease row: K1 (the edge stitch, P2tog, work across to the last 3 stitches P2tog into the back (also called p2tog tbl–through back loop), k1. If you don’t know how to p2tog tbl look that up in the free videos. (Here is my description of how I do it: when you have 3 stitches left on the left needle, keep the yarn in front because you are purling, twist the left needle tip in toward your body until the back of the work is showing, insert the right hand needle tip right to left through the second stitch from the tip and on through the first stitch, let the left needle go back to the normal position, yarn around and purl those 2 stitches together from that weird position.) Be sure you have the yarn in the back for all knit stitches and bring it to the front between the needle tips for all purl stitches. To change from a purl to a knit again, take the yarn back to the back between needle tips.

There is no information about where this pattern is on your post. I am quite certain it is a Drops pattern from GarnStudio. I will be able to find it if you give the pattern numbers. It should be some number with a hyphen in the middle. I will be happy to look at the chart with that information.

Thank you to Suzeeq and MerigoldinWA , I understand a little better now, sure knittibg more difficult to learn than crochet. But i will keep trying to learn to knit until i’m good at it. Here is the number of the pattern that you can see the diagram : garnstudio.com and Drop number is 98_1
As i said i’m very new, so please if you can help me write down the pattern step by step, so i can follow easier, i don’t understand the chart or diagram .
And also please help me with this question, too: how to M9 or make 9 st in 1st .
Again thank you for all your help.

This Neckwarmer pattern? I don’t see anywhere you’re supposed to make 9 sts in 1 stitch. I think you’re confused about the cable pattern because it looks like there’s 9 sts in it but there’s only 6. The one that looks like this - / \ - you put 3 sts on cable needle and hold in back, K3 from the left needle, then K3 from cable needle. The cable that looks like \ / you put 3 sts on cable needle, hold in front of piece, K3 from left needle, then K3 from cable needle.

Okay, CO 15 sts, on a US6/4mm with double yarn (it’s presuming you have very thin yarn, but if you have regular yarn, don’t double it).

Knit 2 rows, the next row (RS row) k1, do the 13 sts of the chart, end with k1.

Next row (WS row) k1, work 13 sts of chart, k1.
Next Row - k1, YO, work sts on chart, YO, k1
Next row - k1, knit the YO tbl, 13 sts on chart, knit the YO tbl, k1.

Keep repeating these two rows until you have 27 sts. For the new stitches, knit them on the WS and purl them on the RS.

When you have 65 cm (about 25") dec 1 st each side on every other row until you’re back to 15 sts.
To dec - k1, P2 tog work across the chart till you have 3 sts left, P2 tog tbl, k1.
Knit 2 rows garter sts and cast off loosely.

Then you go to the ribbing.

You sure you want to do this right off the bat? I’d suggest practicing some more, especially learning how to do cables and YOs and knitting/purling through the back loop.

Yeah, I’m thinking that you should learn to knit well first then jump into patterns.

Well, I didn’t mean ‘learn to knit well’ exactly, we can all use improvement no matter how long we’ve been knitting. But some more practice and learning increases and decreases, and using a simpler neckwarmer pattern.

Here is the link to the webstite:

I know how to knit cable, i just have 1 pattern that asked to make 9st in 1 st ( M9 in 1 st) it doesn’t ask to do cable, just want to increase 9 st form 1 st, but i’m just not sure how to do that, don’t know if i should (k1,p1,k1,p1…)9 times in that 1 st.
And i’ll take your advices and will try to practice until i’m good at it, the knitting pattern, chart is confusing.
Again thank you very much for all your help

At the bottom of the pattern page at Drops there are links to videos that show about some of the things you have to do for this scarf.

Okay, another pattern has m9 in one stitch? Then yes you can k p k p k p k p k. Or it may be easier to k yo k yo k yo k yo k into that one stitch; the YOs won’t quite look like holes and more like purl stitches. Is that the hemlock ring blanket?
