Consistent Lace Hole Sizes

Been knitting lace patterns and have trouble getting consistent hole sizes. My problem is the row above a yo where I do not have a neighboring stitch to manage the tension for the knit or purl.

Is there a method to control tension when stitching the yo (on the next row) or is it just experience?

Just maintaining the tension you have been using is enough and yes, that may come with practice. It certainly helps to block lace to open up the holes and even out the sts.
