Confusion at "shape neck"

Hi folks,

I’m getting ambitious and trying to make a cardi for my niece’s baby (due next month) but I’m stuck already on the back. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

My pattern goes like this:
I’ve been knitting in irish moss to the neck

patt 22 st, slip next 17 onto stitch holder, pattern to end { where does the yarn go when you skip the middle stutches.}

Continue on last set of sts as follows: dec 1st at neck edge on every row to 18st remain. Cast off. {This I get}

With right side facing, rejoin yarn to remaining stitches at neck edge.
work as instructions for other side.

So what happens to the 17 stitches I’ve out on a stitch holder.?

Thanks folks!

Em xx

Ah, the mysterious ways of knitting. It’s a deep dark secret…:teehee:

After you slip the 17 sts to a holder, attach a new ball/end of yarn and work the remaining sts as indicated. Just leave the yarn on the other side hanging, you’ll pick it up and use it later. The 17 sts on hold are for the neck edge and you should be told what to do with them at a later point in the pattern. They will probably be moved to the needle and worked as part of the neck band. HTH
