Confusion about Illusion Knitting 4 Row cycle

Hi there

I’m new to illusion knitting. My eventual aim is to do the Linux scarf but I think it’s better to start with something a little easier first.:knitting:

I am confused about the 4 row cycle when reading charts.

I understand rows 1 and 3 are knitted across.

I understand row 4 is pearled for the white squares and knitted for the coloured squares.

I don’t understand row 2.

Why do some patterns have row 2 being pearled for the white squares and knitted for the coloured squares(e.g. http://ysolda.com/wordpress/skull-illusion-knit-scarf/)

yet other patterns have row 2 being knitted for the white squares and pearled for the coloured squares (e.g. http://laurasknits.googlepages.com/heartillusionscarfpattern ).

I’m quite confused. Any help would be fabulous because I’d love to design my own patterns but wouldn’t know what to do for row 2.

Hello!

Well, the thing to remember is that each designer has their own key to their charts. You just have to follow the instructions for each individual chart. Here are a few tutorials online about Illusion knitting that might help you better understand the mechanics of it:

You can also google illusion or shadow knitting tutorials. Hope that helps some
