Confusing Pattern

Hello friends, struggling with this pattern, it is so confusing, I did Rows, 1,2,3, but I can’t make sense of row 4 and where and how I work the chart. The pattern is free on Ravelry and it is “Leaf Love Dress” I am sending the picture of the pattern![image|900x1200](upload://sWvwD2S6mdghc3Qg7aNmPRLC5wo in.jpeg)

Row 4:(RS) (Button Hole Row) Knit 2, YO, K2tog, (Knit to 1 stitch before the next marker, KFB, Sm1, KFB) work 2X, knit to the center panel, Sm2, work in pattern, Sm2, (Knit to 1 stitch before the next marker, KFB, Sm1, KFB) work 2X, knit to the end
(8 stitches increased)
Row 4 starts the lace pattern. In row 3 mark the center 11 sts on the front for the lace panel These markers are called PM2 as opposed to the raglan increase markers. Use different color markers or a different type (safety pins, circles of yarn). The chart begins on row 2 and is worked back and forth until you join in the round.

Leaf Love Dress pattern by Taiga Hilliard

Leaf Love Dress is a timeless piece, with a pretty leaf pattern down the front.

Thankyou so much for your help Salmonmac, let me try that. Those increases are so confusing :grinning:

Thank you so much Salmonmac, your help is greatly appreciated :+1:

It’s going to get easier once you see the pattern of increases before and after each marker. Good luck with it and come back if you come across a problem.

Thanks for your information.

Oh thanks again Salmonmac, but this pattern is got me so confused:frowning: After Row 6, what do I do and what row of the chart I do???:frowning:
Then after row 7, there is no row 8 :frowning:
So frustrated, thank you for your patience and kindness :+1:

Well, this pattern isn’t written in the most straightforward way, for sure.
You’re right, there’s no row 8. The pattern uses row 6 as the next wrong side row.

After you work rows 1-7, begin repeating rows 6 (a wrong side row) & 7 (a right side row). Repeat rows (6 & 7) 3 times. (The pattern says “4 times total” but they are counting row 6 & 7 from that first time through.)
Then work rows (4 & 5) once.
Finally work rows (6 & 7) 5 times. (This time they really do mean 5 times.)
The stitch counts at the ends of these instructions are a good check that you’ve worked the correct number of repeats.

So if you make a check list for these rows it’ll look like this:
1-7
6,7,6,7,6,7
4,5
6,7,6,7,6,7,6,7,6,7

See if this helps and if not, come back.

Well Salmonmac, this pattern is definitely wrong, nothing match, Having a hard time on row 4. I should end up with 71 sts. But I don’t. Taking down do many times. As I check the notes on Ravelry, I see others had the same problem, but nobody shares how they fixed it☹️
Thanks again, Rose

I know this is frustrating but I’m sure you can do this. It’ll be worth it to work this very sweet dress.
How many sts do you have when you finish row 4?

Row 4 starts with 63sts. There are 8 increases by Kfb (knit front and back) to give you 71sts after you’ve completed the row. There’s a buttonhole made by yarn over, k2tog but that won’t change the stitch count.
When I have trouble visualizing a row I sometimes draw out the row like this:

This is the set up in row 3. The long vertical lines with dots are the markers for the increase lines.
On row 4 increase by Kfb (knit front and back) before and after these lines with dots.
The vertical lines marked M2 set off the leaf pattern. Do not increase at the M2 lines. Use a different color marker for these 2 markers.

Oh!Salmonmac! You are sooo kind to take the time to draw a visual of how the increases should go, I really appreciate it!! You are a wonderful resource🙏. After row 4 I do have 71 sts. Then in row 6 there is another increase of 8, which should make it 79 sts. But I end up with 81 sts. There seem to be 2 extra sts. on the center leaf panel???

The stitch count isn’t considering the increase that occurs on row 4 in the lace panel. There are 4 yarn overs and only 2 decreases (a k2tog and a ssk). So you should have 2 extra sts. Those 2 extra sts in the lace panel will be decreased on row 6 of the lace panel.
Sounds like you’re on target!

Hello
I had a similar sort of panel on a top and the pattern had a note NOT to count stitches on certain rows and was because the was an increase in the lace panel which are decreased a few rows later. Maybe your pattern failed to add this helpful detail?
I found it helpful to write in my pattern how many extra stitches there would be on those particular rows so that I could stitch count to check my progress. Maybe this could help you?

Cute dress, wish I had someone I could make that for!

Yes, You are right Salmonmac, there are 2 additional increases in the lace panel, so that explains it😀 again, thank you, thank you my friends!!!
