Confusing Chart? Help!

Hi all, just got this pattern book by Viking Garn. I am trying to figure out this chart but it doesn’t make sense to me.

I am supposed to cast on 16 stitches then follow the chart. What confuses me is that there is a symbol to k1 between yo’s before I even start the yo’s. :??

Does this make sense to anyone? Thanks.

Hi and welcome!

Could you link to the pattern or give a name for the pattern, for when the experts chime in? Or a link to a picture of it? I’ll be honest, without seeing the fabric it’s kind of hard for me to say what they mean. It’s possible that somewhere in the pattern the k1 between yo is defined as a special stitch.

Thanks, I didn’t think to do that. This is a poncho pattern and the chart is for the lower border in the beige color. After I can figure out this chart and knit this border, then I start knitting the white yarn for the poncho.

It uses Viking Naturgarn on 11 needles. I hope the picture helps!

Thanks!

If you notice, the legend/key is missing a symbol. There are only 5 symbols on the left-hand side, but 6 explanations on the right. I think the last explanation is supposed to have a dark dot/circle as it’s symbol on the left. Shift all the other symbols up a bit to line them up with their explanations.

The first row would be…
K11, K2tog, YO, K1, YO, P2

Good catch!

“I am supposed to cast on 16 stitches then follow the chart. What confuses me is that there is a symbol to k1 between yo’s before I even start the yo’s.”

The k1 between the yo’s occurs as you’re knitting the first row. Written out it’s as RK posted.

Is there another decrease on the border that’s not shown on the chart? Otherwise, you’ll increase one stitch every other row (two yarn overs and only one k2tog shown on chart).

There is a decrease on every row and that offsets the two yos.

Shouldn’t there be 2 decreases, 2 k2tog?

ETA. Ah, sorry, you’re right. I see the decrease in the even rows as well. Thank you.

Thanks RK. I keep knitting and then ripping out. In the pattern book it says this:

Poncho:

Using needles size 11 US (size 7 or 8mm) and beige yarn, cast on 16 stitches. Work back and forth in patt as charted. When work measures approx. 55 inches (140 cm) end with a complete patt., bind off. Sew short edges tog.

Using circular needle size 11 US (7 or 8mm) and white yarn, pick or knit up 168 sts along the border edge. Work in rnds in St. st. Dec on every 8th round as foll: etc., etc.

From what I understand, I am to ignore the last left side 2 boxes on the chart for that is to be ony worked for collar and mittens. I will be making a collar if I can get this right.

I never worked with a chart before and you are right that there are 5 boxes and 6 explanations.

I wish the instructions were written out instead of a chart.

Thanks again,
Deejavu

Here’s a write out of the chart. It’s pretty straight forward, so I think I got it right, but if someone else would like to take a look at it to be sure, I’d feel better – I’d hate to hear later that I steered a newcomer wrong!

A couple of things: (1) The stitches worked only in the collar and mittens are in [brackets], so you can skip them as needed. (2) There is a k2tog on each even numbered row which might need to actually be a p2tog – I don’t have time right now to test it out, so you’ll be on your own for that one! Sorry!

Hope this helps and good luck!

Spokaloo, you’re right, the even rows should be p2tog. I changed that in the pattern that you kindly wrote out. (I also just edited some of the even rows for purl sts at the ends.)

Row 1: K11, k2tog, Yo, k, p2, [yo, k2togtbl]
Row 2: [p2] k2, p3, p2tog, p10
Row 3: k9, k2tog, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, p2, [yo, k2togbl]
Row 4: [p2] k2, p5, p2tog, p8
Row 5: k7, k2tog, k2, yo, k1, yo, k2, p2 [yo, k2togtbl]
Row 6: [p2] k2, p7, p2tog, p6
Row 7: k5, k2tog, k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, p2 [yo, k2togtbl]
Row 8: [p2] k2, p9, p2tog, p4

Hi all,

Just wanted to say thanks again! I finally did get it but for the border it doesn’t lay flat so I cast on 168 stitches and knitted the feather and fan pattern for the border and now I’m on the white portion of the poncho. If I can get a picture I will.

I never knit from a chart before so it was a real challenge. I may use the chart to knit the collar, I will see how it turns out.

Thanks!! :muah:

Hi again,

I worked more on the knitted part of the chart and I finally got it right I think. I needed to knit more repeats to get it right and one side does lay flat. Will try to show a picture. Thanks again for all your help!

Looks great! Thanks for the photo. The poncho is going to be lovely.

That’s really pretty.

Thanks! I knit the white (it’s really an off-white) part of the poncho with all the decreases to get to the neck portion and realized it was too short for me (I’m on the tall side and not skinny) so I ripped about 10 inches out, ouch!

Good thing I have extra yarn because I’m going to make it longer and the neck wider or it would turn out to be a turtleneck. Golly, many patterns do NOT look like the picture. I really should have studied the measurements in the pattern first, duh!!

Oh well, knit and learn, LOL!

I’m with you on that!

Just lovely!

And around and around I am still knitting… Had to take a break as I had to shovel lots of snow yesterday! Brrrrrrrr!!! It’s cold in Vermont… :blooby:
