I am really new to knitting and I have a pattern where on row reads: K1 (P9, K1) across. Does this mean that I knit the first stitch and repeat (p9, K1) across the row?
Yes; the part in the parentheses (or brackets in some patterns) is what you repeat.
Sometimes they will use the Parentheses () and other times they will use an asterisk * to show that you repeat from that spot. Knitting Pattern reading is sometimes like decoding sanskrit or hieroglyphics, but it does get easier the longer you do it.
Patterns usually always have a key showing the terms and abbreviations they use and what they mean. It’s extremely frustrating that they don’t. I’ve always dreamed of some kind of knitting federation body who would standardize knitting pattern terms and abbreviations.
