Confused

I am making a meerkat from Sandra Polley’s book “Knitted Toys” and I’m having difficulty with one part of the pattern. Hope someone can help me please.

I have made a foot which has been saved on another needle ready for insertion on to the leg. It says:

Cast on 4 sts. K until there are 7 sts on right hand needle, m1,K3, m1, K3, turn, cast on 4 sts, turn back and K across first 3 sts of first foot, m1, K3, m1, K to end, turn and cast on 4 sts [34 sts] .

Can anyone point me in the right direction please. I’m confused how I turn 4 sts into 7!

Welcome to KH!

When you finish row 10 on the second foot in the previous section, you’ll have 9sts on the needle. (The first foot is on hold.) You’re to cast on 4sts onto the needle that has these 9 second foot sts on it. That gives you the extra sts that you need to work the row beginning with the 7sts on the right needle.

This is a nice video for a knit or cable cast on.

Thank you so much for your response. I understand now. I was putting both feet on separate holding needles lol. Thank you again. Much appreciated.

This is a wonderful book with lots of future projects. I hope we get to see the meerkat and maybe more of the family?
