I’m in the process of creating my first ever piece which isn’t a hat or a scarf. I’m trying to make a baby’s cardigan, and I’ve completed the front(s), back and sleeves. I’m now supposed to be creating a collar for the cardigan, but I’m a little confused as to the exact meaning of the instructions.
I’ve picked up and knitted 69 sts, as the pattern says. It then goes on:
Cont in moss st with 5 sts in garter st for borders.
Next 2 rows Patt to last 20 sts, turn.
Next 2 rows Patt to last 16 sts, turn.
Next 2 rows Patt to last 12 sts, turn.
Next 2 rows Patt to last 8 sts, turn.
Next row (wrong side) Patt to end.
My first query is do I make a row first in the mosst st with a garter st border?
Secondly, I’m worried the piece will come out all wonky once I follow the rest of the instructions.
I think I understand the remainder of the instructions - I do compared to the ones above anyway!
Any help/advice/tips would be very very gratefully received.
Fear not. Follow the directions just as they read and all will be well. You are making short rows here, working only across part of the row before you turn and work back the other direction. This will shape the collar nicely. But I’m not sure about the 5 st garter border for that part, it doesn’t seem like you ever work clear over to the edge? :?? But don’t worry, just do what they say.
Thank you thank you - once again you have provided me with the advice and the confidence to continue. I decided to not work in the garter stitch border while I was doing the short rows, and the collar has formed perfectly. I finished off the whole cardigan last night and it looks really good. I’m very happy and impressed and am now eager to begin my next project. Thanks again.
