Confused on knitting pattern, HELP!

I’m a fairly new knitter and I’m attempting to knit my first garment, which is a long vest pattern from lion brand yarns. I’m a bit confused about the pattern. I casted on the required amount of st., did the 7 rows in garter st. as instructed. Now the pattern reads–
Next row(WS)work 4 garter sts., work in St st to last 4 sts, work 4 garter st. Work even in this way for 40 rows from beg. Begin working in St st only. Does this mean after the row where I do 4 garter st. at the begin and the end of the row, the next row starts the beginning of the 40 rows that I do in St st. Also I hope this don’t sound too stupid a question but does working in St. st mean the same as purling? ------Thanks in advance for any help given.

I read this as you will work the 4 garter sts, St ST to last 4sts, 4 garter sts for 40 Rows…and then begin the ST St only…St st (stockinette stitch) is where you knit one row and then purl the next row…

Can you link us to the pattern or give us the name…that way we can look over…:happydance:

another way of writing that would be:
row 1 - k all st
row 2- k4, p to last 4 st, k4
Repeat these 2 rows 19 more times.

this would give you 40 rows of stockingette stitch with a border of garter at either end. Garter stitch is created by knitting every row, and stockinette is created byt he alternating rows of knits and purls.

this was a pattern on a skein of lion brand wool ease yarn. I went to their website and searched for that particular pattern, but couldn’t find it. It just says lion brand wool-ease long vest. They showed 4 patterns for long vests but the one I needed
wasn’t there. Go figure!
