I am knitting a bear for my son using a Debbie Bliss pattern…this is my first non blanket or hat project and I am confused by the next step…
I am making the ears…first, cast on 13 sts. K4 rows (got that part)…here is the confusing part: Dec 1 st at each end of next row and 3 foll alt rows. 5 sts. K1 row. Inc 1 st at each end of next row and 3 foll alt rows. 13 sts. K4 rows.
I don’t understand the decrease and increase part…3 following alt rows?

Following means after and alt is alternate or every other one. So dec on the next row, and every other one for a total of 4 dec rows.
ooohhh…sorry sue but I’m still confused…let me write what I think it is:
first part is the decrease…i decrease 1 at beg and end…then next row I decrease 3 at beg and end? I will have 5 sts left. Then I knit one row of 5 stitches…then I increase 1 at beg and end of next row…then inc 3 at beg and end of next row…so I have 13 stitches…then I knit 4 rows with 13 sts…? Is tht right? So altogether I only have 13 rows from beg to end (4+1+1+1+1+1+4)…

No, it’s 3 decrease rows, not 3 decreased sts.
Alt means every other row, so first dec on the next row, then every other row until you have 5 sts. Knit a row then dec on the next row and every other row until you’ve got 13 sts.
ah ha! Now I get it! I really hope that directions start to make more sense…honestly, is it just me? I feel ike they could have made that a little clearer…maybe not.
