Confused at an easy pattern step....help!

I am knitting an easy baby blanket, well so the pattern says!
6th row says this…
K1. Yo. (P1. K1) twice. P1. Yo. K1.
I know how to yarn over a knit stitch just confused on how to yarn over what they want in the parenthisies! Grr!
I have 7 stitches at this point and should have 9 after this step!
New to knitting, please help!
Thanks!

Hi and welcome to KH. You have to do what’s inside the ( ) twice. So:
K1, yo, p1, k1, p1, k1, p1, yo, k1
The two yo’s will increase your stitch count to 9.

I’m not sure what you mean by ā€œyarn over a knit stitch.ā€

If you can link to your pattern, that’s helpful.

Thanks for the quick response!
So the yo will go with the purl stitch? I wasn’t sure you could do that!
I will try and put the pattern on here!

The yo doesn’t really ā€œgo withā€ either the knit or the purl, it goes between them. If you go to youtube and search for yarn over videos you’ll find lots of demonstrations for both Continental and English styles of knitting. I was looking for a video showing a yo before a knit and before a purl stitch and it can look quite different depending on which hand you use to hold your yarn, though both are doing the same thing.

What are you knitting and what is the name of your pattern? Where did you find it?

I just watched a you tube video and I think I got it!
It is on the bernat site! The corner to corner seed stitch baby blanket!

Can I ask 1 more question! When it’s on the 2nd row directions it starts out (rs) and then gives the steps, is that just telling me it’s the right side? Or do I need to make sure I’m stitching on the right side? I wouldn’t know how to change it if I was on the wrong side?! Thanks in advance!

That’s telling you that you are looking at the right side.
Questions aren’t limited here, you can ask all you want. Usually someone can get back to you fairly quickly. Yarnspriations is down and I couldn’t find your pattern on Ravelry. Are you working from a few stitches and increasing to make it wider?

ETA It probably won’t matter much on a seed stitch blanket but you can use a stitch marker, safety pin, or a piece of yarn to mark the right side.

Yes…working from a few stitches and making it wider! You have helped so much…thanks!

That pattern makes a really nice blanket. Post a picture of it if you’d like, we love to see what people make. I’m glad I could help. Happy knitting. :knitting:

I will definately post a picture when I am done! I’m so excited because I am half way thru, but I have another questions for you. I’m now starting to decrease and my pattern says, "K1. yo. P3tog. K1."
I’m not at home so I can’t find the exact pattern online. I understand the P3tog, but I’m confused at how I do the yo. On a yo. p1. you have to wrap the string around 3 times. Do I do that with this one too and then does it only take away only 2 stitches. correct?! I so appreciate your help! Thanks in advance.

Are you saying that when you do a yo. p1. you take the yarn from the back of the work over the needle to the front, then under the needle to the back before coming over the needle a second time so it is in the correct position to purl and there are 2 strands on the top of the needle?

Yes…that’s correct! Do I do that same thing for the yo. p3tog.?

Yes…that’s correct! Do I do the same thing for a yo. p3tog.?

No, when you do a yo (between a knit to a purl) you should bring the yarn forward under the needle (as if you are going to purl normally) then take the yarn over the needle to the back and tuck it under the needle a second time. The will give you one strand on toop of the needle and put the yarn at the front of the work ready for you to do the purl stitich.

The article below explains how to do yo’s between every combination of knit and purl stitch. It a ā€˜well thumbed classic’ on KnitttingHelp that I lifted from another thread.

I was really confused about what you said you were doing and I’m glad it’s been clarified. To Julie’s comment I’d add: If you’ve been doing double yarn overs up till now, you can continue with double yarn overs so that the second half matches the first half. The double yarn overs will result in larger holes than single yarn overs will and to change now would mess things up. I don’t think that the larger holes will be a problem in your blanket, just be consistent.

I’ll back GG when she says ā€˜be consistent’. Blankets are very forgiving when knitters put in their own mistakes design elements.

I think the larger eyelets (fancy schmancy word for the holes you’re making) will be very pretty. You can consider this a BOGO free in yo lessons. iknitwithcatfur has a video for yarn over 101 I think that will cover just about anything you’d want to know to go along with Julie’s link. My internet is super slow so I’ll let you look it up if you’re interested.

Darn it…I think I have been doing a double yo! Grr! I love how the blanket is turning out so I’m glad I don’t need to restart it! I was so proud of myself that I had been doing everything correctly!! I appreciate all the help!! You guys are awesome!

If I were doing a double yo, would that give me 3 extra stitches? I was counting after every row just to be sure that I had the right amount of stitches and I always ended up with the right number! So maybe I have been doing just 1 yo. I will have to double check when I get home!

Unless you worked each of the yo’s separately, you wouldn’t be off on your stitch count. Knitting can be very forgiving.

I’m so glad it can be forgiving…it’s hard when I like to do everything EXACTLY how the directions state. And hard to just be okay with it being different! Ha!!! However, with that being said, I wouldn’t want to start this one over! So I will get over it quickly! lol
