Confused about pattern

I’m making this cardigan.

http://www.berroco.com/191/191_madeline.html

I’m almost finished the back, but I don’t understand these directions for shaping the shoulder and neck.

It says: “Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 6 sts at beg of next 4 rows. AT THE SAME TIME, bind off center 20 sts for neck and working both sides at once, bind off from each neck edge 4 sts once, 3 sts twice.”

I’m not sure if I’m supposed to bind off the first 5 then knit to the place to bind off 2o and asl do 4 on each neck edge. Or do the first 6 rows of binding off, then bind off the ones in the middle.

I’m also not clear about how to work both sides at once. How do I bind off and move around the neck hole without a big long string?

I appreciate any help I can get with this.
Thanks,

At same time means just that, you’ll be doing the center 20 while doing the ends. At least that’s the way it reads to me.

Not sure about both sides at same time though.

You’ll be using a second strand of yarn to work both sides at once–no long strings across the neck.

I would do this:

Bind off 5, work to center 20.
Using the second ball of yarn, bind off the center 20 and work to the end of the other side.

Now, when you’re starting a row of either side at the outer edge, bind off the number of stitches for the shoulder that’s called for.

When you’re starting a row at the neck edge of either side, bind off there.

Is that enough?

Yes! That makes so much more sense to me now.

Thank you both!
