Confused about pattern instructions & binding off

pattern says:

BO 4 stitches at beginning of next two rows. Knit two of rows in stockinette stitch. Repeat from * to * a total of three times.

Does that mean I bind off four stitches on the first row, and then four stitches on the next row, or do I just bind of four stitches at the beginning of the first row? After I bind off the four stitches, how do I knit the rest of that row? Which two rows am I knitting in stockinette stitch?

Thanks a lot for any help you can give me!

You can’t bind off stitches at the end of a row, so they have you bind off stitches at the beginnings of the rows to have equal bind offs at each side.

Bind off the first 4 and then just keep knitting to the end. Turn the work and bind off the first 4 and purl the rest of that row. Then work two rows–one knit and one purl and repeat the process all over again.
