Confused about Gauge

i am totally clueless when it comes to Gauge…im a newbie and im not sure how to understand it or even get it right…
in order to get it right on a pattern you have to use the right needle size for that pattern i know but i have read where it says that sometimes it isnt right and wont knit right…
what do i do about that and figure out how to gauge it…
i hope this makes sense…

First you knit a sample bigger than you will measure of the stitch you will check. Then you measure the space in the middle of the sample and count the stitches to see if you have enough or too many for gauge.

If the gauge isn’t what you wanted try a different needle size and make a new sample to measure.

Exactly what knit2btied said.

You have to swatch it and play around with different needle sizes to get gauge right.

thanks so much.
