Colorwork sock yarn sticking thru

Hey All, I am working on a baby sock using “stripes and checks” pattern in “Knit a dozen Baby Scocks” by Edie Eckman. It is 3 strands of color and I have made it all the way through turning the heel, top down sock pattern, and all of a sudden a single strand of yarn has started turning up sticking out about 2 rows down. The first time I cut it and pulled it through and tied it back together, and darned if it didn’t happen with the next color. What am I doing wrong?

So the strands that are papping out are on the heel striping or are they on the checks? I think this is a photo:

Is it maybe because you’re carrying the yarn up the side of the heel flap or the floats near the rib too loosely?
(I have got to get this book.)

Hey Salmonmac, thanks for answering. The version I have has stripes all the way down the foot, and that is where I am having the problem. I made it past the heel and as soon as I got done with the gusset I started having the problem. Thanks for the link to the ravelry pattern, I will link it up to my ravelry notebook.

So what do you think I am doing wrong? I have been bringing the color I’m working on under the other other strands, that is what the pattern says to do to avoid holes.

Could you post a photo of the problem? Both RS and WS may be helpful.

Yes, a picture is a good idea.
Is it the yarn that’s being carried while you knit the alternate color stripe that is poking through? It sounds like there must be quite a bit of slack in the yarn if you can cut it and then re-tie the strand. You’re likely changing colors about every two rows so maybe when you change colors, be sure the strand of the new color has no excess play. I wouldn’t pull it tight but just make sure it doesn’t have any extra inches.

Yes I wish I had taken a photo, it has happened 2 times and then I waited to hear any answers so have not tried again. If it happens again I will post.
It’s not the slack at all… the yarn is live, that is, it is coming from a live skein. As such there is unlimited yarn… it is just sticking out the right side instead of staying inside. I know it’s terribly hard to imagine without a pic!
If anything I am knitting too tight, since the ankle part has drawn in and I don’t know if the baby’s foot will fit through! :oo:

It is hard to imagine. It seems that if it’s the workign yarn, you should be able to move the strand to the back (or inside) and continue on. We can hope it doesn’t happen again. If it does, come on back.

:eyes: OK I got it straightened out - I guess I was just being lame, but it requires some effort to hang on to the other strands to make sure they don’t go where they shouldn’t - maybe I was just too tired HA!

So happy you were able to sort that one out yourself. It’s no small thing at all.
