Collar Help

I’m doing the collar on a baby cardigan and it reads
1st row: knit
2nd row: k2 purl to last 2 stitches k2
3 row: k2. k2tog. knit to last 4 sts. sl1. k1. psso. k2. Work 9 rows even keeping 2 sts. at each edge in garter st.
4th row: As 3rd row

My question is when it says to work 9 rows even does that mean that I do the 3rd row 9 times without the k2 tog. and the sl1 k1 psso. If that is the case wouldn’t it be just 9 rows of just knit?

To knit rows even means to knit the sts as they appear. So, knit the knits and purl the purls, except for the 1st 2 and last 2 of each row which you are told to keep in garter stitch, so knit those on every row.

This is how I’m reading what you’re saying -

Working even is knitting without any of the decreases/increases. So for 9 rows you’d do what it says keeping the center in stockinette and always knitting the two edges on either side.

Then you apparently do the decrease again. I’m not sure why it’s written as “row 4” because that’s confusing.

If you have a pattern name and a pattern link it’s always helpful for us when you ask questions. It’s easier to see what you’re talking about if we can actually see the pictures/pattern.

The 4 rows I wrote are exactly how they are written in the pattern for the collar. I then have he cont. even from beginning 3 1/2 in.

I don’t understand why it says work 9 rows even as instructions for the 3rd row. then next row: as 3rd row.

The 3rd row has no purl in it so where would the stockinette come from if I don’t do row 1 and 2 again?

I don’t have a link to the pattern, I found it on the bernat website

WQhen a pattern says to ‘work even’ that means to continue with the previous stitch pattern, not to do any increases or decreases - you’re keeping the stitch number ‘even’ or equal to what it is. You knit the RS rows, and purl the WS rows except for the beg and end sts which are knit. You dec on row 3, and do 9 more rows knitting the RS rows and purl the WS rows with the garter sts at both ends.

I found the pattern so anyone who needs it to help can go there.

Okay, it doesn’t actually say row 4. From looking at the pattern you are actually now on the part where you change needle sizes -

Change to larger needles and A, and proceed as follows:
1st row: (RS). Knit.
2nd row: K2. Purl to last 2 sts. K2.
3rd row: K2. K2tog. Knit to last 4 sts. Sl1. K1.
psso. K2.Work 9 (9-11-11) rows even, keeping 2 sts at each edge in garter st.
Next row: As 3rd row. 39 (43-43-49) sts.

After the “next row” which means after the 9 rows you continue even again until it’s as long as you need it for your size/pattern.

Thanks Jan for posting the link. I don’t no how to do that.
Thanks everyone for the help, got that all figured out now lol but now I have another problem. Thank goodness for this site and all your helping hands.
When it says divide for front: Next row: k8. Turn (neck edge). Leave rem sts on a spare needle. Work 3 rows even.
My question is when I work these 8 sts. even do I keep 2 sts. at each edge in garter st. or do I purl all the purl row and knit the knit row?
