Coat

 I don’t know what to do with this coat!!! Here is the pattern…

Foundation Row: WS *K3, p1; rep from * to last 3 sts, k3.

Row 1: *P3, k1 winding yarn twice around needle; rep from * to last 3 sts, p3.

Row 2: *K3, sl 1 purlwise wyif and dropping extra loop, yb; rep from * to last 3 sts, k3.

I know from a shawl I just knitted that when you drop stitches, they are connected somewhere, I just don’t know where these stitches (in the coat) are connected. Can someone help me?? :?

I’m not really sure what you’re asking–are you asking where the dropped stitches are? In the photo, the dropped stitches are those wide, holey lines that run down the coat. Those are the yarn-overs creating holes in each row; the dropped extra loop makes the holes bigger.

I hope that’s what you’re asking about…

Yes, that’s what I was asking about…I tried to knit this coat in a different yarn, and when I dropped the loop, it didn’t connect to anything…THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO CONNECT TO SOMETHING, ISN’T THAT SO?

I have another question…This coat measures 46" in width but I need at least a 48" width…do you think larger needles would do it? :wall:

I’d hate to have to alter the pattern and I really think larger needles would give me the width I need…

Maggie

Larger needles will make the pattern larger, but I’m not sure how much. You could knit a gauge swatch with the larger needles and see how much larger it could be. I always go up a size needle to obtain gauge, since I must knit a little tightly. You might need to go up a couple of needle sizes, or maybe not, to get a larger coat. There’s too much knitting here to risk assuming that the needle size will make enough of a difference without seeing what your gauge will be. Once you figure that out, we can help you see if the coat will be 2 inches wider where you want it to be.

On row one you wrap the yarn twice. That’s what your’e dropping, the extra wrap. It’s not a stitch, so it doesn’t go anywhere. It just creates a long strand.

But where on the coat is this Long Strand???

I guess I’m inexperienced enough to want answers to everything…

If it doesn’t attach to anything, where is it???

Maggie

Knit it and see; it’s hard to explain, but once it’s there on your needles, you’ll see exactly what it is and it will click for you.

Thank you SOOOOOO much for helping me…Celine told me to come here to get help and she wasn’t kidding! I’ll go out and buy a pair of size 19 and 20 (if they have that size) and knit up a few swatches and get back to you (or someone there). I don’t know enough about the site to figure out who I’m talking to…I don’t even know your name…’

Thanks again,
Maggie

If you look over to the left of the posts, you’ll see who you were talking to, and probably kiddie pics of us, too.

And we’re happy to help even if we remain anonymous to you! But, as Ingrid says, we’re easy to identify.

Don’t know if you have a Hobby Lobby near you, but I’ve seen size 19 and 20 needles there.

HI Maggie, :cheering: :cheering: so glad you found your way here!!! I told you this is a wonderful place to “be” when not knitting!! :XX:

That coat is just beautiful!! Is it from a knitting book? Or did you find it on line?
