Clarification

So moving right along with my first sweater. Have sewed sides and shoulders together using mattress stitch. What a cool stitch for joining. Used a thinner yarn and it just disappeared.
Onto full length shawl collar. I have picked up stitches all up one front side across shoulders and neck and down other front side. Thanks videos on this site. Am ready to knit collar but again this instructions are confusing. Quoted…

Work in pattern II ( knit RS pural WS) , at the same time work the first row WS as follows: 1 edge st,k1,349 sts pat II, k1 edge st. In the folll rows work sts as they face you. At band length of 20cm bind off all stitches. Fit in sleeves.

Huh?

Drawing a blank. What is edge st…that first row I start on WS and pural? The reg pat II from then on?

Pamela

The edge stitch is the first stitch on the needle, the beginning of the row and then the last stitch on the needle, the end of the row. See if the pattern says something earlier on about working the edge stitch. You can always knit the stitch on every row or you can slip that stitch at the beginning of the row.
Yes, sounds like the first row is a WS row which is purled. Do the edge stitch then k1, then purl to the last 2 sts, k1 and then work the edge stitch. Continue to work row 2 (RS) this way with the edge stitch (however you decide to do it), p1, pattern II, p1, edge stitch.

So basically I am Inserting a purl stitch at the beginning of knit rows and a knit stitch at the beginning if pural rows. I wonder if this is to help with curling?

Have you a suggestion to decrease the curling at the last. The whole sweater is stockinette st and I am thinking the collar will curl like crazy when done. Perhaps a row of purl at end or rib. K1 p1?

Thanks for your help. This forum an videos and you tube have really helped me do this my first sweater.

Just checked no reference to edge st anywhere else in pattern or general instructions. Could I not just knit or purl it

Yes, it does sound like curling will be a problem. I think the idea of the ribbing (or seed st) is a good one to counteract the curl.
I think the p1 on the knit rows and the k1 on the purl rows is to give the end of the collar a pattern, too and of course, you’re right, it may help wirh curling at the ends.

Thanks again

Your front bands may want to flip. If you go to this linkand scroll down you’ll find a fix that involves a crochet hook. I’ve not yet tried it myself. If you do, post about how it works for you, OK?
