Circular needles

I am attempting a scarf using circular needles. I cast on 138 stitches. With the yarn in my right hand I am to knit 4 rows. With straight needles after I finish the rows I have an empty needle unconnected to the fabric. With the circular needles they stay connected with yarn inbetween. Is this what’'s supposed to happen? Does this make sense? It just doesn’t feel right but I don’t know what I did.

Circular needles can be used to knit flat, just like straight needles, or they can be used to knit in the round. It depends what you are wanting to do. If you are intending to knit flat with the circular needle you need to start with the stitch that has your working yarn as the first stitch in the needle end held in your left hand. When you complete a row, the two ends of stitches will NOT be joined. On the other hand if you are intending to knit in the round you need to start with the stitch with the working yarn as the first stitch on the needle end held in your right hand.

When you get to the end of the row, turn your knitting around and work on the other side with the empty needle just the same as when you knit with straight needles.
