Circular needle/lengthwise scarf question

Hello everyone,

I am a very green knitter, having only started within the last two months. After completing my first scarf recently, I decided to try a lengthwise scarf on circular needles. Therein lies my question- how do you not knit a big tube? I have roughly 300 c/o and have knit through the first row, about to start a third. However, it looks like I’m about to knit the two “ends” together, creating a joined piece/tube instead of a long rectangle with two ends. It seems as if I keep going with more rows, I will just end up with a really fat sleeve :oops:

Can anyone lend advice? Thanks for your help! :hug:

Not sure if I can explain it well in words, but when knitting with circular needles as straight you just flip your work as though you would if the needles were straight. When knit I am always using the needle in my right hand to “knit” and take stitches off the left needle, so with circulars you just turn the work so that you don’t join the stiches and end up knitting a tube. I’m sorry, it is so hard for me to explain in words…knit all of your stictches from the left needle to the right, then flip the work so the right needle with the working end of the yarn is now in your left hand and start back the other way…

Ok, so I have flipped my work and have started on the third row. Sorry to have so many questions!!

Will I ever have to cut any strands? I feel like the piece is still connected and that I will need to cut a connecting strand later.

You know, Im thinking (and remembering) that I probably forgot to flip my work after I casted on, which might be why I’m starting to knit a tube…

Any thoughts?

If you’ve joined them, the only way to save it is to unknit until they’re not joined anymore. You’ll save your cast-on at least.

you must have joined it on your first round - I’m not sure how to tell you to disconnect that…just remember to knit as though you are on straight needles and flip the work. Once I got used to this method I love it and knit most everything on circulars now, they just fit better in my hands and I can knit faster with them.

I do these scarfs all the time
they are good things to do
(my biggest was 700 stitches, and turned out to be WAY to big)
Put a Stitch marker, it reminds you that you are at the end of the "Row"
I loved doing raibow scarves, with 4 rows of each color Red, Orange, Yellow, Green Blue, Purple

I use either a NICE Silver bobbled Stitch marker, or a Plastic ring with a Safety pn added to it to help it stand out
just make sure its big enough to go around the needle, bit not so big it diagonally crosses the stitches and Binds them tight to the needle

if this DOEs happen just re-adjust it, to slide more easily
