Circular needle and stitch help

I’ve decided its time for bigger and better projects - because how many scarves does someone in South Florida need? I want to attempt this blanket that says to use Circular Knitting Needle: 6mm [US 10] – 29". I watched the video on here on the needle but it was a round project - I’m not sure I understand how its going to make a flat blanket…

It also incorporates a few new things for me that I will use junk yarn to figure out including “psso : pass the slipped st over”

…and switching back and forth between colors

but first is figuring out this circular needle deal

Any tips/suggestions?

You can knit flat, back and forth on a circular needle, it’s just to hold the large number of stitches you’ll have. Cast on, and the yarn’s at one end of the needle. Put that end in your left hand, take the other end and knit the first row; it’s like having 2 short needles that just happen to be connected.

The term psso is part of slip 1, knit 1, psso where you slip a stitch, k 1, then pass the [U][B]s[/B][/U]lipped [U][B]s[/B][/U]titch [U][B]o[/B][/U]ver. It’s in the decreases section if you need a video to see how it’s done.

I, too, am in Florida and wanting to make a lap robe for charity. I’m using circular needles and the directions say to cast on two stitches, then on row 1 to knit off 1st stitch increase 2nd stitch. I think I can figure out the increase part, but what in the world is “to knit off 1st stitch”? Am I trying to make something simple difficult?

Just knit the 1st stitch, increase in the 2nd sts by kfb.

So I love my circular needles and have mastered the different stitches. Now I just need to get enough yarn but don’t understand how much I need -

RED HEART® “Super Saver®”, Art. E300, 100% Acrylic (8 ounce/452 yard solid color; 6 ounce/348 multi color skein): 24 Ounces No. 311 White CA.

RED HEART® Ltd. “Foxy™”, Art. E724, 100% Polyester (1.76 ounce/89 yard ball): 1 Ball No. 9387 Indigo CB for afghan

Its a 40x50 afghan.

Also - any tips on how to keep track of what stitch I’m on? Theres like 14-20 different stitches in each row.

Is this what your pattern says you need for the afghan in the “Materials” section of the pattern? Are you planning to use the yarns given? It sounds like it is saying you need one 8 ounce skein or a solid color of Super Saver, and a 6 ounce skein of a multi color and then you need 24 ounces of white, and one ball of the “Foxy” in Indigo. Does that make any sense looking at the picture? That sounds like a lot of yarn, but it sounds like what it is saying.

What do you mean you have 14-20 different stitches in each row? Are you doing something with a lot of different stitch patterns in vertical rows? If you are doing something like that you might put markers between the different patterns.

The Super saver comes in 8 oz skeins of solid color, or 6 oz skeins of multi and it sounds like you need 24 oz total. That would be 3 skeins of a solid color (white or any other) . If you’re going to use a multi, you need 4 skeins. You just need 1 ball of the Foxy, maybe for edging around the blanket.

Use stitch markers to keep track of the stitch repeats. It helps to do a whole row at once. Which pattern is it?

That’s the pattern. I would assume its going to be a lot of yarn.

With the stitches I mean - K3, * sl 1, K1, psso, K4, yo, K1, yo, K4, K2tog; rep from * to last 3 sts; K3. I found when I was practicing I couldn’t remember where I was. Maybe I just need to pay more attention.

Okay, you know that you repeat the sts between the *s? K3, do the first repeat, put a marker on the needle, do the 2nd repeat, put a marker on the needle, etc. There should be 13 sts between them on all the rows, so count after every repeat to make sure you didn’t add one or forget a YO. The markers can be plastic rings or other bits of yarn tied in a circle and should slip easily from one needle to another.

Looks like whatever the Super saver color is, solid or multi, it will be the main color - CA. The Foxy is CB and is used on an odd row here an there.

So I started the project and the first 5 rows went fine because it was straight knitting. Then I did the first row of the pattern and ended up with too many stitches - I obviously messed it up somewhere. I ended up just ripping the whole thing out. Is there any way to just take out a row? The rows are 149 stitches and redoing the 5 rows of straight knitting everytime I mess up will get old real fast.

You can take out a row by `unknitting’ each stitch one by one. There’s a video for that - look under Tips and Fixing mistakes.
