Circular knitting getting clumpy

I am a beginner knitter and I am trying this pattern. It is the first time I’ve knitted on circular needles and I am just doing K1, P1 for the ribbing of the hat. But my piece has become extremely crazy with large loops hanging all over and grew very bulky. I will try to post a picture later if necessary, but does anyone have any initial ideas? Thanks!!

A picture really would help, but I had two thoughts. Is your needle so short that the knitting is all just being pushed together? Is the yarn being looped around when you change from K to P, instead of just switching from back to front between the stitches? (Not sure I worded that clearly. Sorry.)
Good luck!

You meant is she carrying the yarn over the needle to switch between K and P, rather than moving it between the needles.

And yes, a picture would help.

Hello! Ok, thanks for your replies. Here are two pictures. I admit that I may have been looping the yarn around by accident, because it still is really new to me. But maybe you guys can see something I can’t!

First Here’s an overview of the entire piece.

Second I can’t make heads nor tails of this, compared to my previous knitting this looks like a bunch of crazy knots!

I think you’ve been taking the yarn over the needle when switching between your knit and your purl stitches which gives you twice as many stitches as you’re supposed to have. Take some straight needles and cast on about 20 stitches and practice k1, p1 for a while and make sure you always have only 20 stitches on the needle. When you move your yarn from back to front to back, make sure your yarn moves between the two needles, not over it. Look at the ribbing video here - http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/basic_techniques/misc.php

Another thought… if you’re doing the ribbing correctly, the problem may be that the stitches are too loose. Just keep practicing with it.

Thanks Sue! It may just be that I’ve forgotten how to correctly move the yarn around… I haven’t done K1P1 in quite a while. Thank you
