Cinfusing abbreviations!

I’m knitting a dishcloth. The first 6 rows are k1, purl to the end of the row.
The next row is : k1, p1 for 5 sts, p3
What is p1 for 5 sts???

It’s probably 5 stitches.

I actually think there is an error and they should have placed an * because the count is off if I just purl 5 and then 3. It also has x4 after it. There are only 37 sts total and that would be 36 sts with 4 more per the pattern. I’ll try it as if the *is there and see what happens. Thank you.

Ah. Without all the info it’s hard to know the answer. Do you have a pattern name and link?

It’s not K1, P1 for 5 sts it’s k1, p1 for 5 sts. IE you don’t k1 and p5 (which uses 6 stitches) you do 5 stitches worth of 1x1 rib.

Is this the pattern?

If so, row 7 is
(k1, p1 for 5 sts., p3) 4x; k1, p1 for 5 sts
Probably it should be
(k1, p1) for 5 sts., p3 4x; k1, p1 for 5 sts
That adds up to 37sts.

If the pattern is the one referenced by salmonmac then the first 6 rows aren’t k1, purl to the end of the row, they are k1, p1 to the end of the row. This is to get the seed stitch border in the picture.

 Doh, why didn’t I see that! I shouldn’t try to answer when I’m tired. Thanks for catching it!

Not a problem!

How on earth did you come up with that pattern? You are a knitting psychic.

It’s such a cool looking pattern I think I must try it too. All the info here will be very helpful Thanks from me to all of you!

Well, it’s a pattern but I don’t know if it’s the pattern that the OP was referring to. No magic, just the answer to everything: Google!
