Christmas Stockings from Vintage Model

A nice lady has commissioned me to make 3 Christmas stockings exactly like the ones she has already. Her existing stockings were made by her grandmother a long time ago.

I’ve had a very hard time finding the right yarn to match the gauge and color of her stockings. (7 stitches per inch - fingering weight, in Christmas colors)

After much research and swatch-knitting, I’ve chosen some vintage red Bear Brand Ever Match yarn that was in my stash.

And Knit Picks “Palette” knits up to the right gauge, so I’m ordering some in the right color from Knit Picks right now. I’ll be so happy to get a good start on these stockings!

Wow. Quite an undertaking!! Good luck!

That will be quite a job! :zombie: The yarn matches nicely based on my monitor so it should work great!

Those are coming out pretty! I thought you said that you’re a slow knitter…doesn’t seem like it to me.

:roflhard: :roflhard: :roflhard:
That’s the MODEL you’re looking at!
I haven’t knit a STITCH yet! :teehee:

The lady who gave me the model stocking to work with is ordering the yarn from Knit Picks right now. It will be mailed to my house, so I’m just waiting for the yarn now.

The only yarn I have ready to go is the red yarn, and I can only knit an inch with that. So, I’m just gonna wait for all the yarn to get here.

I’m working on charting the names and years now, so I’m not being completely lazy.

Yay! Today, I received the Knit Picks yarn in the mail, and it’s a PERFECT MATCH!!! Woo Hoo! :woohoo:

Now, comes the REAL work - the actual knitting. :teehee:

No Flash - still matches!

:roflhard: :roflhard: :roflhard: Well, I mustn’t have had enough coffee that day!! I’m sure you still knit faster than I do anyway. That’s quite an undertaking!

Hey, I was looking at your post and thought…gee that looks like Ann Shayne’s old stocking in the new Mason-Dixon book Out Side the lines. I looked and see that yep, there it is on page 113. With a link to the pattern for that stocking…which came out in 1945.

Don’t re-invent the wheel if the stocking pattern is already written!

Yes, I was already aware of the free pattern online. I’ve been studying it for the past month, and have everything organized in my brain to knit them.

This weekend, I cast on all 3 stockings, finishing up the ribbing at the top of each of them. Last night, I finished the name and date on one of them. Looking good!

I’ll post a photo soon.

Ohhhhh nice, Sandy!

Thanks Dollyce!

Here’s my latest photo.

Last night, I finished the name and date on the 2nd stocking. I plan on finishing up the 3rd one tonight. Then, I’ll get going on the rest of the stocking.

That is coming out very well. The colors are good and the name looks like it was knit in 1976, just like the other one.

What a great undertaking! Looks like they are turing out well. And, I don’t think 1976 was a really long time ago…

Well, this is just ONE of her stockings that was knit by her mother. The oldest one she has was knit in 1945, the same time the pattern was first published. Right now, she has 5 stockings exactly like this one, and she wants every other member of her family to have one exactly like the rest.

So, I’m knitting 3 stockings to fill out her family members so far.

When I asked her to order the yarn, I made sure to ask for extra yarn. I have a feeling that she will want ANOTHER stocking in the future. I’ll be ready that time!

ohhhh itsa gr8 idea, gud lucks

   WOW!!!

The stockings have been a lot of work so far. Just choosing the right yarn took over a month. Then I did a gauge swatch, and was sure that size 5 needles would work well for me.

Oh well…I was WRONG.
I had to cut off all that chart knitting, because it was CLEARLY too large. The stocking would have been way off.

So, in the trash went all that knitting. :pout:

I changed to size 3 needles, and started the charts all over again.

It’s not easy doing intarsia knitting. Those color changes are a HASSLE!

But, I was determined to finish the chart knitting on at least ONE of the stockings this weekend. Crossed Fingers

So, I stuck in there, and got it done! :cheering:
They match PERFECTLY!!!

You’re a saint!

Hope the next two stockings are a breeze compared to the first one!

Thanks Judy!
I’m MUCH more confident with the other two. I know what I’m doing now.

Wow, Sandy you a-m-a-z-ing! I can’t wait to see to FOs.
