Choosing what to knit as a gift

My son’s preschool has a new director, she has 2 daughters, they are from a warmer more metropolitan area and quite literally own NO winter wear. Having always lived in winter prone climates I find this inconceivable since I own about 100 hats, scarves and pairs of mittens.
Anyway, I was thinking it would be fun to knit something for the 3 of them as a welcome to fall/winter in the country sort of thing. Just not sure if there is a more contemporary pattern/design I should use (I have boys) that they would be more likely to enjoy and wear. Is a scarf better than a hat?

I’m horrid with this kind of thing but I finally figured out that slouch hats are popular (or were, maybe still are lol). How old are her girls?

Knitting a scarf or hat is such a good idea and sure to be welcome. Either one or mittens would be wonderful. Hats with earflaps or chullos still seem to be popular and if the girls are of an age, animal hats are still in.

I have no experience of kids of any age but I think knitting some warm weather gear is a wonderful idea. I’ve always kinda liked those plain hats with a ribbed edge that you can turn up and a huge pompom on the top! Quick to knit in a bulky yarn too!

Working with kids every day (kids’ librarian here) I think you’re safe if you stick with nice bright, clean colors. Vibrant blues and greens and purples are great for girls if you don’t know their specific interests; they are feminine without being “girly” pink.

Older girls would probably love fingerless gloves or a ear-flap hat; younger girls mittens or hat that rocks some animal ears. Either way, texture and colorblocking over picture-design. That way it is super adorable but still versatile enough for lots of tastes.

Good luck! They’ll love whatever you make, of course. -nightingale

I too am a fan of the ribbed pom pom hat ! I have one with a dangley pom pom that I have sewed back on a couple of times b/c a puppy chewed it off.

The fingerless gloves are a GREAT idea !! I love making them and learned to do them magic loop so they don’t take me very long either. Love an excuse to go yarn shopping :woohoo: Will look at animal/color block hats for the younger girl.

Ya’ll are the greatest
