Chart reading help!

Hello, my name is Nancy Kittle. I am an experienced knitter but new to the forum.

I am attempting my first charted afghan pattern and have a question about the instructions. The pattern is the LW3884 Butterfly Cabled Blanket from Red Heart Yarn.

There are several different charts but the one I am having trouble with is the Butterfly chart. It is worked over 23 stitches but increase to 35 stitches, then decreases back to 23. I am including the row before and after the one in question:

  • K1, p12, k2, p5, k2, p12, k1;
  • K3, ssk, yo, yo, sssk, yo, yo, k2tog, k3, p2, 2/2 RC, p2, k3, ssk, yo, yo, sssk, yo, yo, k2tog, k3;
  • P4, k1, p1, p1 tbl, p1, k1, p4, k2, p5, k2, p4, k1, p1, p1 tbl, p1, k1, p4

My question is regarding the “yo, yo”. Can you please tell me if I should wrap the yarn around the needle twice, since there is no stitch between the two yarn-overs? If I do that, won’t it leave a large hole, or will the subsequent row take care of that?

I’m sorry to sound like such a dunce, but before I embark on this project, I wanted to get it worked out in my head.

Thank you for any assistance.

Nancy Kittle

Hi Nancy and welcome!
You do wrap the yarn twice around the needle for the double yarn over which will create a hole or eyelet. On the next row, in each case, you’ll k1, p1 into the yarn overs. This k1, p1 occurs each time you come to double yarn overs in the next row.
It’s a good question and a beautiful afghan.
