Chart- few questions

I get where to start, but what I don’t understand is the discrepancy in number of sts. The chart begins after I have knitted some, and my last row left me with 74 sts, but when I count the sts in the chart there are 54. I have read the whole pattern and it does not say anywhere about knitting sts before and after the rows in the chart. So, it should be the same right?

I figured maybe there are repeats I am missing, but it doesn’t say so. This is a section of the sweater that is knitted the same no matter what size (the front center piece) so it can’t be that I start in a different place.

There are bold lines in between some of the sts, but I figured this was just telling you the multiple of stitches. It should be ten for each, but the first section is actually 4 sts.

I have no link as this is the Cables and Lace Tunic from the Creative Knitting Mag January 2009, on page 48. I searched for errata and there is none on their site for the chart piece I am doing (center panel chart).

If someone has the magazine- this is the way I understood the chart which of course left me with a bunch of live sts still on my needle. It says to start on 2, which is the RS.

p4, T3F, T3B, p2, k2tog, yo, k1, p2, k20, p2, k2tog, yo, k1, p2, T3F, T3B, p4 (54sts?) (what am I missing??)

Thanks

In the Pattern Notes, it says to work the front panel first and it looks like it’s sewn together later. That’s just from a quick check of the pattern, I’ll look at it more carefully and let you know if I find something different.

It says that for the charts, but the pattern begins on page 48 with Center Front Panel which is knitted flat, and then you move onto the Back and Sides which is done with the Back and Sides charts.

OK, let me take a better look at the pattern. . . I was looking at the top as being the center panel. I see what you mean, now.

It looks like you work the Lace Rib pattern on the stitches before and after the chart. Look at the Set-Up row instructions in the Center Front Panel section. It says to “work established Lace Rib” across the stitches before and after the center panel chart stitches. So in your case you’d work 10 Lace Rib, and then the center chart, then 10 more Lace Rib.

Usually if there’s bold lines on a chart, that’s the part you repeat. Since that includes 10 sts and you think you’re short 20, then that would be twice the repeat.

No, there aren’t repeats in the chart. I have the magazine. It’s a panel of cables up the center of the sweater, with the size changes taking place by adding to the side stitches.

Thank you so much! I knew there was something I was missing. I read that “Set-up” row and didn’t really get what that meant. Now I will know for future patterns! You saved the day. I was going to cast-on another project, but now I can keep plucking along with this one.:muah: :knitting:

 And on another positive note, when I was looking for the magazine, I found a pattern that I thought I had lost! :cheering:

Yay!:woohoo: It was not all in vain!
