That’ll probably work. Try it out on a gauge swatch and see if you like the look of the knit fabric using the larger needle size.
I originally had to go to a smaller needle size to get the correct gauge for the pattern.

Yes, I almost always have to do that. See if you like the stitch pattern at slightly fewer sts/inch on the larger needles and check to see how much the change in gauge will affect the pattern. Another possibility (depeending on how complicated the pattern is) is to keep to the gauge you have now and add in enough extra sts to make the sweater slightly larger.
can you give us a link to the pattern or a pattern name?
I have never changed the size by adding stitches. I’m not that experienced, I usually just follow the pattern. I bought the pattern online so I can.t give you a link

Try your original idea of going up a needle size and see what the swatch looks and feels like. Should be good.
