Changing Colours

Hello,
I am knitting a sweater for my son and I am stuck.
The pattern is from an old Family Circle Knitting magazine and it says in Notes to use two strands of wool at all times. The needle size is 5.5mm and I am using 100% wool (not chunky or anything but just regular size).
I have done the section that makes the ribbing at the bottom and now it asks me to start the chart. The chart is easy enough to follow but my question is how to I change to a different colour at the beginning of the row when I have been using two strands of the same colour up till now? Do I only use one colour (the new one) and continue or do I somehow get two strands of the new colour and keep going?
If there is anything else I am missing here, please let me know.

I would say that you should drop the original two strands and pick up two strands of the new color. If there is a picture of the finished project, maybe you could look at it and see if it looks like that is what they did.

Hope this helps,
MGM

Is the color you used in the ribbing continued in the chart part, or do you use two different colors? Your note said to use two strands throughout so when you start a new color use two stands of it as well. If the ribbing color continues just start knitting with the double strand of the new color when you need it (you will deal with the ends later) leaving a nice tail. If you use 2 different colors and won’t be using the ribbing color for a while you can cut it, if you use it soon you may like to carry it up the side to where you use it next. Start the row with two strands of the first stitch in the chart and when you get to where the next color is used just take a double strand of it and start knitting. You may find a bit of a loose place or hole where you begin a new color but you should be able to fix that nicely with the tails you leave.

Hi MGM! Thanks for the advice. I have already tried looking at the picture but unfortunately there is not a good picture of it to check. I guess what I will have to do is just unravel the entire ball and try to cut it in half to make the two strands.

The colour that I am using is different from the ribbing. It looks like there might be a knit row and a purl row of this different colour and then it changes again in the chart. Thank you very much for your help.
