Changing collar on pattern

I’m knitting this pattern http://wrights.com/class/needlework/knitponcho/knitponcho.htm but I don’t like turtlenecks so I’m thinking about substituting a roll type collar for the turtle neck. Maybe something like the neck roll on the Textured Cotton Chenille Sweatshirt listed in the free patterns on this site. Do you guys think it would look funny to put a roll type collar on this poncho? I certainly can’t envision what it would look like with a different collar. I’m just now working on the sleeves section and will soon reach the neck shaping which will be all new stuff for me. TIA

Thanks Amy! Think I will give it a try. I appreciate your reply!! This is the most complicated pattern I have attempted so I’m basically having to just knit it row by row and look up how to do different stuff as I go. I often refer to the videos and search function you provide in order to progress with the pattern such as the “Knitting On” video when I got to the instructions for making the sleeves. This site has taught me to knit and I want to thank you!!
