Changing a cable pattern to stocking stitch

Hi I’ve got a pattern for a great cabled jacket/cardigan, which I would like to knit up plain in stocking stitch (using an interesting wool). The pattern is simply too much for me, but I really like the overall shape of the garment. My question is, Should I knit the correct size or go down a size as there won’t be the patterning tightening it up? Any suggestions? Thanks!

It depends on how frequently the cable pattern occurs in the jacket. The best thing to do is to work a swatch with your yarn and needles and then compare the size and gauge to that given in the pattern.
What is the name of your pattern?

Of course, I didn’t even think of that! I’ll do that. The pattern is Hayfield bonus aran 9396, I really like the style of the collared one. It appears to be fairly slim fitting and not too bulky. Another idea I had was to do the whole thing in a wide rib.

Lovely jacket. Yes, if you’re going to change to wide rib or stockinette, a good sized test swatch is definitely needed.
