Change size and needles

Hello! I am new to the forum but this website has helped me numerous times with my knitting.
I found the following pattern on ravelry and really like it:

It is an called “gilet noeud noeud”

however, iwill need to change a few things and I don’t know how!

  1. instructions are for 3 yearsand I am making this for a ab girl 6 years old
2)Instructions say use the yarn doubled and use size 5 needles. I want to use the yarn single and use smaller needles

Can anyone help me with these questions, ie resizing and using same yarn but not double? I am knitting with Debbie Bliss baby cashmerino.

thank you so much for any help!

  1. The original pattern calls for fingering weight yarn, held double. This works out to be more like a worsted weight yarn, held single.

So, first question, are you planning on using a fingering held single or a worsted held single?

  1. It appears that neither the Ravelry pattern page nor the pattern itself provide a gauge. Therefore, just calculating a conversion, is not so simple.

  2. The diagram shows a very unconventional construction, which is then folded and seamed up to create the sweater/cardigan.

I think you’re going to have to do a lot of work to re-construct this from what info you currently have. You’ll need to start with figuring out your gauge. Then take measurements of the intended recipient. Then figure out how those measuremnts fit into the schematic. Then figure out what your st counts need to be to give you those measurements. Hopefully, you will then have created something that looks like the schematic and can then be semed up.

The appearance of the cardigan itself is very simple/basic. You might be better off using another more standard cardigan pattern (with sizes) and just substituting the moss stitch border and St st body where required to create the same look.

Thanks a lot! This helps so much-I knew it would be complicated texture your tips are very sensible.
I am planning to use fingering yarn-single I would lime a light texture

Welocme to KnittingHelp!
This looks very do-able because the pattern is pretty straight forward, no complicated stitch repeats or shaping. As RK suggested, do your gauge swatch and figure out how many stitches to cast on. I think that because there’s so little information on sizing, you’d have to do that anyway to make sure of the approximate size. The projects on Ravelry indicate that it’s been made in a range of sizes.
Do post a photo when you finish if you’d like. It’ll be fun to see this cute little sweater.
