Casting on

I’m making a baby sweater using a Sidar Snuggly yarn of bamboo and wool. I’ve cast on using the long tail cast-on and have finished about five rows of stockinette and the bottom is really rolling.

Should I use another cast on method so that the bottom won’t roll. I don’t think that blocking will fix this problem.

Thanks!

I don’t think it is your cast on method. If you are doing straigh stockinette stich, that is a natural tendency for it to roll. Usually ribbing will take care of it, so you might want to place three or four rows of ribbing at the beginning. The pattern may be designed for it to roll. Could that be the case?

I think the original garment used wool and it didn’t appear to roll. The pattern has a patterned stich at the yoke, do you think the ribbing will look ok. Thanks for your input. I’m new to this help site and it’s wonderful.

It’s not the cast on. Stockinette rolls and if you use ribbing, seed or garter stitch for 4-6 rows that will help.

The original garment may have been blocked to within an inch of it’s life for the photos. Stockinette curls no matter what cast on.

Does the number of cast on stiches remain the same if I do ribbing?
And should I do k1, p1 or k2, p2?

Ribbing won’t affect at all the number of stitches, it will only affect the way the fabric looks and its tendency to curl.

I’ve read that k1, p1 is more elastic than k2, p2, but just do the technique with which you feel more comfortable, or which design you think looks better.

Yes, either 1x1 or 2x2 can be used - 2x1 will give more of a stockinette look too. Cast on about 18 sts and try them all on for a couple inches each and see which looks good to you.

Depending on what sort of pattern stitch is at the yoke, garter or moss (seed) stitch might look better round the bottom (and sleeve cuffs) than ribbing. Could you post a link to a pic of the pattern so we can get a better idea?

Here’s the web site that will show the pic

Thanks again

What a sweet little sweater!

If it was me, I wouldn’t do the bottom rows in rib. Ribbing wouldn’t suit the style of the cardigan, as it would tend to pull it in a little. The cardigan has a more modern shape and I think seed or garter would definitely make a better effect. As the pic isn’t really crisp I’m not sure, but the cuffs look to be garter stitch. If that’s the case, maybe garter stitch round the bottom of the sweater would be lovely. If the cuffs are seed stitch, or if you decide to do them in seed stitch, I’d use seed stitch round the bottom as well.

Are you going to knit the cute matching Little Boy Blue hat? I notice that features panels of seed stitch, so having seed stitch round the bottom of the sweater would tie in with that.

No, definitely not any ribbing.

You’re exactly right - the sleeve is knitted for one inch then start decreasing. I think that will look great to use the garter stitch at the bottom.

Thank you again for your help. I’ll pay more attention to the pattern before I purchase the yarn next time or let someone sell me yarn that isn’t going to work with the patter unless we alter it. But it is such a cute sweater!

Thanks again!

Glad I could be of help.

Stocking stitch at the bottom of a sweater wouldn’t lie flat, no matter what the yarn, so it wasn’t your fault or the person who sold you the yarn… its the pattern at fault. But at least its an easy modification to the pattern.
